Yeah, because it's only chicken. And bad chicken at that.

My local Winn Dixie fries better chicken.

It's pretty similar overall to Chicken Shack in BR.

Never had it but chicken does look like Chicken Shack.

Had it a couple times, underwhelming. It's almost as if Gus's thinks frying at too hot of a temperature makes it spicy. So it was kinda bland with a slight hint of burnt.

I've never eaten at the New Orleans location, but the original location and the one in downtown Memphis are insanely good. The one in Austin is missing something, so perhaps the New Orleans one is missing that "something" as well. But missing something or not, it's still superior to Popeyes, which is still good in its own right.

Gus’s in Bham is off the charts good. Best fried chicken I’ve ever had.

Didn't Gus' try opening a place in the Warehouse District years ago?

Gus's Chicken is better than Popeye's. Without question. And you're not going to get served a cold, shriveled piece of mild, when you ordered spicy.

Gus’s spice is not better than Popeyes. Gus’s goes heavy on the paprika so it doesn’t appeal to me as much as Popeyes.

The location I go to has table service rather than counter service. This also enables tipping which leads to better quality workers who give a shite about ensuring a quality product and quality service. I think they are better than Chick Fil-A workers because they are more knowledgeable about the options.

The location I go to also cooks the chicken as it’s ordered. And this is also where it beats Popeyes. It’s extremely fresh, has crisp skin and batter that is cooked perfectly.

If I could take Popeyes spices and substitute those for Gus’s chicken, we would have the perfect spicy chicken and the ultimate Fried Chicken dining experience.

I also wonder if I just happened to have stumbled into a rare location with unique characteristics uncommon elsewhere.

KFC is nursing home quality chicken. It is extremely bland. I have no idea which 11 herbs and spices they claim to use, but none of them stand out or even enhance the product. This a chicken that should thrive in culinary wastelands like Germany or Poland.

The crust is usually soft and mushy as if their target demographic is elderly people who need help chewing their food.

Popeyes on the other hand plays peek-a-boo with my tastebuds, and that’s the kind of oral pleasure I’m looking for when gobbling fried poultry.

If you’re a senior citizen who gets excited over using your well earned senior discount on a bland product that’s easy to chew with dentures, then shine on you crazy diamond. But if you believe your palate and preferences are advanced enough to make positive contributions on this forum, then we need to have an intervention. Maybe it’s time for you to stick with Yelp reviews or whatever app AARP users rely on.

It's still open on Diamond Street and doing well.

I'm a big fan of wet batter when it comes to fried chicken, and the effervescence that emanates from Gus's chicken is heavenly.

Chicken Shack is my favorite in BR, but it's not on the level of Gus's.
