What can I do to make it not so boring?
Cheezits on top? Fontina? Ricotta?

Bacon Bits is all I have for you. Ricotta sounds awesome though.

Donald Link has a great recipe for it. You'll never go back to the normal cream of mushroom stuff.
He has you fry your own onions, make a bechamel sauce, etc...

Add water chestnuts and sour cream to the casserole. Top with buttered corn flakes.

Make it from scratch. Alton Brown has a good recipe, if you need one.

There really is nothing you can do. I would never make it myself. I would prefer a broccoli rice. I've always been told that green bean casserole is just kind of tacky in other words white trash.

IMO, it's only tacky if you use that 1950's recipe using canned ingredients. Try Alton Brown's recipe - it's not that hard and it makes a delicious dish.

Nothing. Green beans are simply boring. Serve some broccoli with hollandaise or simple steamed asparagus instead.

Scratch make with fresh ingredients.
Fresh green beans, mushrooms and make your own cream of mushroom sauce.

Thx guys. Got some fresh greens from the garden. Dad requested casserole. Will work on it tomorrow morning.
Cottage cheese too dangerous to try and add?

Alton Brown's is pretty money. I've made it for family members at holidays and they like it

Somehow, these things always found their way atop my mother's green beans.
...I'm not necessarily saying that it's a good thing though.

Those were always my preferred topping.

I love these! They are not fried with batter and taste absolutely delicious.

Use fresh home grown green beans and cook down like you weren't making a casserole with onions, bell peppers and salt meat .... Lots of salt meat. Also when you make the casserole after cooking green beans add cheese o it I use a little velvetta.

I made it this morning. Ill post some pics later but I used bacon onions garlic ricotta half and half milk cheddar parm fresh green beans from the garden, butter and flour roux, smashed cheezits and French fried onions on the top. It tastes muh different than te traditional gb casserole-so much richer and better.
The only thing different I would have done is cook the beans down a little more. I just blanched then.
