How does it compare to Nine Dragon on Burbank?
I havent had Nine dragon in a many years but as I recall they were similar with China Bear being a bit better. Not sure if Nine Dragon has the lunch line special or not but China Bear's is a good deal. I can easily make two meals out it.

. They used to own the Hong Kong on Millerville before the 2016 flood took it out.
This is good to know. I used to go there all the time for the black pepper chicken.

Seems like that is the standard for most of these places.

I went to China Bear last night. I recognized the man cooking as the same guy from the old Hong Kong but the food was not the same. It tasted good but there is too much sugar in the fried rice and black pepper chicken. It is not how I remember it. IMO fried rice should not be sweet.

Lee's Asian Fusion in Watson. I keep seeing tables of 8-10 oriental folk who will caravan in from New Orleans just to eat there.. Owner moved to Watson from Chicago.

Nine Dragon does not.
China Bear still does? It’s so hard to find any place that kept a buffet or serving line since Covid. I haven’t been to China Bear in years but I used to eat it all the time in the early 2000s when I first moved here. It wasn’t far from where I worked. $5 a person. I bet that stuff is $10 or more now.
When I get Chinese food now it is from China Star. Nothing special but the people always remember me and their Singapore noodles hit every time.
Oriental Pearl is great for a buffet and it’s probably the only one left. They were smart to stick to what did well for them.

It's already been mentioned a few times in here but China One and Oriental Pearl are our go to places. Hard to go wrong with either on this side of town.

I go to Wonton's on Highland. Their Amazing Chicken is my favorite.

Oriental Pearl is legit. Go during their busy hours for hot fresh food. 3-4pm is bad.
If you dont mind the drive, Central Buffet after 4pm is worth the drive.

Me and my LSU roomies used to live in the Woodlands nearby and were Hong Kong regulars. She and the hubby/chef are great. His smoked duck egg rolls were my fav items. He still does them at China Bear.
It was decent fare, but at best only on par with say King’s Wok, or some Oriental Pearl.
Cheng’s was solid the one time I went, but not necessarily memorable. I need to go back, and see how well they do a few Omi’s classics like Ants Climbing Trees, Eggplant, etc..and try more dishes.
Lee’s Fusion is on a slightly another level up than most, especially for BR’s limited Chinese market. It is very consistent and has a deep menu. It wouldn’t rate with the best of SF, LA, Hou, NYC, SD, LV,etc..but for BR..may well be #1 overall?
Asian Seafood can be hit and miss depending on the dish, but their Basil Beef rocks, and their House Fried Rice strong. As are the fire pot soups. But, much of their dim sum menu can be meh by San Fran, LA Vegas, NYC standards, yet is an excellent BR addition and needed, despite very proud pricing. However, honestly, I’ve only been five times in person, and did takeout about fifteen times, and still have only barely scratched the surface of it’s MASSIVE menu.
PF Chang, yes a chain, and quite Americanized, but still when contrast to the BR market’s limitations..has some stellar dishes. The Surf and Turf, Miso Salmon,etc..they shouldn’t have shitcanned the Chicken Firepot Soup.

China Bear is decent for takeout. It's consistent. No idea where to go for decent sit down Chinese food in BR.
I'm not ashamed to say that I frequented that buffet place on Nicholson down from Tiger Stadium. I could eat my bodyweight in crab rangoon with a gallon of that cherry kool aid sweet and sour sauce.
