Cheap eats (lunch)--
Corner bistro (burgers, in the village)
Joe's pizza (bleeker and 6th ave) for slices
grey's papaya for hot dogs
street meat at the halal cart in midtown (someone already mentioned the address)
China Town

Pizza Joint--
agree with John's on Bleeker

Nice Place--
My favorite is Gramercy Tavern.

Reasonably priced fun dinner options ($20-25 meal)
Korean BBQ on 33rd street
Les Halles (steak frites)
Bar Pitti (Italian, outdoor seating)

And Manhattan (including the subways) is so ridiculously safe, it's almost mind-blowing.

It is safe.. but I wouldn't suggest it for a novice.. I mean take a short ride like on the 6 from the Upper East Side to Downtown.. If you wanna get say from the Met to the financial district... but don't try and get all fancy and switch trains at 42nd street or union square.. If it's your first time, just cab that shite.

personally, I will have a car service handle the driving to and from the airport from now on; also if we are going out somewhere for the night and planning on drinking. it cost a little more, but there is worth every penny.

Ate at Gordan Ramsey's restaurant at The London. it was decent, but with so many options probably won't be going back there.

FWIW, fly into LGA, cheaper and nicer than JFK/Newark.

Plan a subway trip before you leave so you aren't looking lost the whole time.

Pizza - gnocco in the east village. All local. Took my gf and she loves it, not pricey at all, and intimate candle lit setting.

Deli - Katz. Pastrami on rye w mustard and a browns root beer. Nuff said. Yall can share on sandwich. It's plenty.

Something different, luke's lobster for lobster rolls, Russ and daughters for bagel and salmon.

Steak - keen's, though pricey, very worth the money.

Molly's pub on Madison ave (I think) has an awesome burger and it's also all locals. Corner bistro is good but was real touristy last I went. Like a bus full of burger fanatics. But still good. Grays for hot dogs, late night at round 3am when yet good n drunk is thebest. I'm going back in august. This thread gets me excited

In the mood for an old fashion NY steak dinner? Take the short cab ride from Time Square over to The Palms Steakhouse on 2nd Avenue in Midtown. Waiters are old grump asses who have been there 50 years and like everything else NY, its a bit expensive, but damn good!

Travelling into the city from Newark isn't bad either.. I take the AirTrain that takes you around Newark to NJ transit then to Penn Station. Takes about 25 minutes to get from Newark to Penn Station. NJ Transit

I really like flying Jet Blue and really like their JFK terminal.

It just always seems to take forever to get into Manhattan from there, and unless I can get a much better deal on Jet Blue, I generally find it much easier and less stressful flying into and out of LaGuardia. The airport itself is definitely a dump, though, no doubt.

Never done Newark.

It's not exactly what you'd call a "scenic" ride.. but for $12.50 and no traffic into the city.. can't really beat the NJ transit

I meant it to read that LGA is cheaper than JFK not nicer. Newark is usally cheaper than both, but Newark is not worth the savings.

First, don't rip John's.

Grimaldi's is good, but John's, Joe's, and Keste on Bleecker are my favorites, that whole block between 7th and 6th avenue is the best food block in the city. The Blind Tiger across the street is the best beer bar in like, umm, the universe. I live two blocks from there and in no way could I be biased.

Second Katz's, Grimaldi's, Joe's and Peter Luger. I've been to most of the famous deli's (2nd Avenue, Carnegie, etc.), but Katz's is easily my favorite.
Grimaldi's is my favorite sit down pizza place. Joe's has great pizza by the slice. Peter Luger is one of the best steak places anywhere.

I'd also suggest Balthazar, if you want to go to a French bistro.

My wife went to NYC with some nurses for a seminar and the concierge advised them to 'just ask the cops'. They are familiar with their neighborhood beat and know the best places to eat.
She followed this advice and every cop recommendation turned out great.
