a majority rules argument. now you've really gone off the rails.
I think it's a little deeper than "majority rules".
if 82% of adult americans do not smoke, it's not exactly tit for tat when you say that non smokers are being the selfish ones.
It more boils down to why that 80% isn't smoking. Rather than just the number itself.

are the non smoking business owners trying to force the other business owner to be non smoking?
no, but they are perpetuating their purist views & entitlement which is ruining America!!!!!!!!

and that is the moment you jump the shark

because before the laws, every building, every airplane, every business allowed smoking.
We will never return to 1950s level of smoking. We have laws regulating the advertising of cigarettes and alcohol. Cigarettes are no longer featured in TV and Movies. Rightly, smoking on airlines is banned. The war on tobacco has been won. The complete eradication of smoking is what some people desire. this is one more step along the way. I do not favor it.

has the general public not become more educated about smoking since then though?
this is why it wouldn't be like the 50s again
we are more educated about the side effects of smoking
people were educated in the 80's. didnt change much.

Hey, it wasn't my ridiculous quote. Yet I'm quoting it word for word and i'm the one jumping the shark
Again, why would you support a business if you truly feel that way?
feel free to go back and read the quote again for context.

im not generalizing here, but on the whole, smokers are the most selfish people on earth. every day you see people smoking in cars with a baby in the back seat. hell my parents used to do it every day when i was a kid. to them, having a smoke was more important than the health risks to their children. very, very selfish.
I'm sorry your parents subjected you to cigarette smoke as a child. I really am. But it's clear you may have some unresolved issues that are clouding (pardon the pun) your judgment in this particular debate.

Second hand smoke is classified as a carcinogen. So just like government doesn't allow business to construct buildings with asbestos, smoking should not be allowed in any business open to the public.

pretty sure the quote was about people trying to force their beliefs onto others

I'll never understand how I'm the crazy person for using this as my deciding factor.

All they have to do is put a sign saying there is asbestos and it is all good.
Same thing if the building doesn't meet those oppressive Fire codes and has inadequate means of egress, just put up a sign.

i just want to make one last point then im off the debate.
first off, i am no liberal by any means. it may sound stupid to some, but i am all for laws that directly or indirectly protect children. even if it means the inconvenience of adults.
secondly, and to further my point. if an establishment, business, airplane, whatever is an "18 and over" place, than by all means, smoke away (at the discretion of the business owner). if your business allows people under the age of 18, than yes, smoking should not be allowed in that building by law.

I have not engaged in the element of this argument that's attempting to assign levels of selfishness, so I cannot comment on that specifically except to again point out that a majority rules system of governance goes against the intentions of our democracy.

What if the made them clubs and you had to become a member. Just like some places in Texas towns.

I don't care how harmful smoking is
if I own a business and I want to allow smoking within that business, I should be able to do that
if I lose lnchs business because of it, that is my choice to make
its that simple
