This makes you sound like a count and you're probably exaggerating this story. When someone asks you want to drink and you say "a beer" what the hell do you expect him to do? Say what you want. He's a bartender, not a mind reader.
A bartender, especially at a place like Outback where the beer selection is small, should be able to name all the beers on tap and in bottles. That's their job. If the beer selection is extensive a beer menu should be provided.
If a bartender asked me what do I like, I would respond the same way. I like beer. All beer. Tell me what you have and I'll choose.
As for the standing on a stool comment, that might have been a little overboard.

You're right, they should be able to name beers on tap and in bottles, no doubt.
But if they ask you what you want and your response is "beer", you're being a jackass. You response should be "what do you have on tap?" or "what do you have in bottles?" if you want a beer. It's not the bartender's job to know what you want without you stating what you want or asking what they have.
He should have fired off what they have anyway, but saying you want "beer" when they ask what you like is being a prick imo. No shite you want beer, but what do you want?

A: This is not the OT, so chill out a little.

B: What in the world did he do wrong?
quote:Sounds like he's just trying to be a dick here. Why not, "What kind of beers to you have on tap? in bottles?"
Asks what I want and I say, 'a beer'
also, you're sitting at the bar, the service is going to be less than sitting at a table.
quote:I would have ignored him also. Sure you want good service at a resturant but hell you also should show a tad of respect to your server.
I'm totally ignored
Just my opinion...

I got stale chips, bad food, and slow unsweet teas from a new messican joint in a new Holiday Inn in Vicksburg yesterday. My waiter, a big goofy Swede name Johannah (wtf?), asked me toward the end how everyting was. "Not too good", I says. "Great, Thaank You for coming" replied Johannah. The whole damn experience was wierd..

Agreed. I'd laugh at the person who asked for "a beer" in my bar. I remember a friend I used to have from Russia used to say that at restaurants because he had no idea what to get. He'd just ask for a beer, never make a decision on one, and wait for them to return with one
So strange.

Mr. Balls, I think the Bananas Foster experience has put the gris gris on you.

Well then, you would be unprofessional in doing so. I bartended for several years at a busy bar/pub and still do on occasion when a friend is in need.
Bartending is a job, and should be treated as such. Be a pro and do your job. Save the pettiness til after closing when you can vent to the staff.
Now, certianly, there are some customers who deserve to be laughed at, to their face. But that is very rare, and not necessary in this situation.
You ask a bartender what he has and he says "I dunno". No place for that.
And it wouldn't matter if this was Outback or Commander's Palace. No place for it.
But i do agree with a previous poster, that standing on a stool was a little too dramatic. If the service was that terrible, say "No thanks" and go somewhere else.

You are quickly becoming intolerable. I never said the bartender was innocent. But the problem started when saying you want "a beer"
I don't know where you're getting the whole this is your job BS from because I never once said the bartender was okay to say he doesn't know..
If your waiter asked you what you want to eat and you said "food", would the be okay?
If you said you want a "soft drink" is that okay?
I mean come on.

It looks to me that some people seem entitled to excellent service w/o being a good customer.
These people seem to have the mindset that they are better than the server and should be treated like royalty

At Bistro Byronz last week, the guy sitting to the table next us yelled "I want something cold to drink, and something hot to eat!" then just continued his conversation with the people at his table when the waiter asked him what he would like to order. He wouldn't order anything specific.
The poor kid just kinda stuttered, and walked away confused.
I hate those people.

This right here is a prime example of why I refuse to work with the general public and I tip ridiculously high everywhere.
People suck.

Freaking this.

And in Louisiana, even saying you want a "coke" is not enough, since so many people think soda and coke are exchangeable words

Exactly.
I had a bachelorette party dinner Saturday night at Rock N Sake. They don't have private rooms there but I was able to get them to give us the upstairs to ourselves. You're supposed to have 80% of your party there to be seated, but they let us sit when we only had 2 people.
They were REALLY going out of their way for us. Well one girl in the party with us "didn't like" her sushi and asked if she could swap it out. They told her there was no way to get her out of paying for it (and rightfully so.. there was nothing wrong with it. she just didn't like it).
Everything had been so perfect service-wise. The bride's sushi took like 2 minutes longer than ours because of a small mistake.. The waitress apologized dozens of times and my friend is sitting there saying she's aggravated to us.
I couldn't help it. I blew up. I told her I bent over backwards to get them to do all of this for us. The waitress is busting her arse. With a table of 20, she has to get something for us every time she comes to the table. She made a fricking mistake.. she's human.
It's almost an insult to me as the person who set everything up to have the bride even consider acting like that.
Luckily, I know how big groups are and made sure to tell the waitress many times before people arrived to let me know if anyone is unmanageable. I also gave the waitstaff an unopened dozen of gourmet cupcakes and a hefty tip.

What a jackass. I'd have given him the most expensive thing on the menu
