Downtown Baton Rouge property to become new restaurant, sports bar, 'upscale event space' (Advocate)

I didn't see this posted, and didn't even know about it until walking in front of the building yesterday and saw the alcohol permit.

The owners of several local bars and restaurants are taking over the lease on a building at the corner of Third and Laurel streets in downtown Baton Rouge to open a sports bar, Creole restaurant and event space within the next two months.

Brad Watts told Downtown Development District commissioners Tuesday that The Bengal Taproom, Cecilia and the upscale event space will all be open by February.

“We’re excited and exhausted, but we’re looking forward to it,” said Watts, who co-owns The River Room and Kalurah Street Grill along with Chad Hughes. Hughes is also one of the owners of Ivar's Sports Bar.

The Bengal Taproom will go into the space that had been occupied by The Draft House, which closed in October. Plans are to open the bar in the next couple of weeks. Watts said it will be an authentic sports bar, with up to 19 TVs, 40 beers on tap and a menu with staples such as hamburgers, chicken wings and cheese fries.

Not because of the owners but I dont have much faith in anything new downtown right now.

No night time traffic during the week and the crowd on friday and saturday is pretty undesirable

Actually, I went downtown on a couple random Wednesdays around Christmas and New Years and it was PACKED every place I went. Downtown isn’t suddenly getting worse, it s about the same. Crowds are a little fickle and inconsistent, but still go to hangout.

People tend to go out during the holidays, christmas parties, etc

I know youre Baton Rouge's biggest cheerleader on this site so it doesnt matter what i say, but unless I had very deep pockets and basically just need a place to dump money into, you couldnt get me to open up a place downtown.

I'd argue it is getting better as more high salaried young professionals continue to move downtown.

This sports bar has been a long time coming for downtown.

I haven't been to downtown consistently in a few years, but this seemed like the case when I did. I remember going to Draft House on a couple of random Friday afternoons and we were pretty much the only ones in the place.

I don't set foot in the clubs, but Cask & Barrel and Happy's seem to have a pretty steady clientele for being downtown. I think this place can do well, especially since they will be serving food. Add in a decent size hotel opening two blocks away and more people living in the area with that big Florida development coming along, downtown is definitely not getting worse.

I think I've been to Draft House maybe 3 times and not for very long and I live and work downtown/spanish town. It was just a bland place with half their taps usually out. I'll be going to this place frequently most likely unless they really shite the bed.

Wish it was a pluckers wing bar instead
What keeps me out of downtown is the shady clientele and all the rules and regulations when it comes to drinking....
I would not open a bar down there untill that changes
I'd like to see more high end resturants that are local or at least louisiana or texas based

Downtown isn't even consistently crowded or packed on weekends.

There is a ton of people/money downtown in the evenings Monday through Saturday. Anyone saying otherwise hasn’t been in years.

Eta: I just remembered that the last time I was working on a Sunday, Capitol City was so packed for brunch/lunch that I had to sit in the bar.

You may be correct for Friday and Saturday, but that is simply not true during the rest of the week. It is dead every night.

I agree, and not every weekend is packed either

Problem with Downtown BR is, it's basically an island in the middle of nowhere for much of the crowd it's ostensibly looking to attract.

What, exactly, is dead? I eat downtown during the week on a regular basis, and the restaurants there are almost always more busy than restaurants I would randomly show up to during the week.
