What, exactly, is dead? I eat downtown during the week on a regular basis, and the restaurants there are almost always more busy than restaurants I would randomly show up to during the week.
You eating lunch or dinner?
Either way, I think the majority in here are talking about places to drink moreso than eat.
There is just hard competition against downtown. They cant draw the college kids because Tigerland and Bogies area dominate that market. Its hard to get the post college crowd because the Perkins area from the Overpass to Olive is filled with better bars and food.
Whats left is the Central, Zachary, and Baker crowd for the weekend.
Every time I go downtown, I realize why I never go downtown

Both. I probably get lunch downtown two or three times a week and dinner once or twice a week.
But yeah, if they are talking about bars, I have no idea. I'm too old (and tired) for that shite

They don’t draw the college students because most bars downtown are 21 and up. Reggae’s, Mike’s, etc are all 18 to get in places.
There’s still a lot of older college students who go downtown too, but there’s also a lot of people from the areas you describe.

the crowd on friday and saturday is pretty undesirable
Replacing a dump like the Draft House with an upscale sports bar is a move in the right direction, If you want to get the roaches off of the street.

I walked by the place and loved that the flipped the bar so most of the bar seats are closer to 3rd st. Between that and serving food they should better absorb the hotel traffic.
Draft House needed 20 people or so to look like it was worth walking into because so many people were hidden from the “window” view of the place. contrast that to a place like Happys which (from the street) can look reasonably busy with 4 people sitting at the bar.
On any given weekday there are 700 people in the hotel rooms downtown who are going to go out (if only for a beer or two because of business travel, math basis of 70% occupancy on 1000 rooms). Only a few thousand people live downtown, and if 10% of those are going out on a random weeknight then that’s a max of 200-300 locals. But, 1000 potential clients every night can easily sustain 20 bars with weekend support coming from elsewhere in the parish and happy hour support from the 22,000 people that work in the area.
If your weekday market is 70% out-of-Towners than optics are crucial and “word of mouth” marketing is worthless. The role of local regulars is to put enough people in the bar stools so that Joe business guy walks by and determines its worth a beer...and this cascades into 7 more Joes walking in.

Looks like they were able to pull off a soft open in time for Louisiana Marathon weekend.
That's a step in the right direction. I think they were trying to open by New Years and missed that date, but at least they're not missing the other winter high traffic dates downtown.
A true Baton Rouge downtown bar would open the weekend after Spanish Town and wonder what happened (Jolie Pearl opened the weekend after Live After Five ended).

Well, FWIW, Bengal Tap Room and Jolie are owned by the same group of guys so maybe they learned their lesson.
How is Jolies doing? I remember many on this board didn't give them much chance at surviving but they've made it a couple of years so they must be doing ok business there.
