ohhhhh, you are referring to people who come in order a 22 oz bone in rib eye well done to split with their s/o, mumble about it looking more burnt than if it would have been done on the pit at home, complain that they cant get two complimentary sides with the one steak, ask for ketchup, and a-1, and look at you stupid when the bill is still over 40 dollars because they forgot cokes are 2 dollars a pop, and tax?
and fwiw, those people tip. 2 dollars
I hate these people. Also hate the people who order extra something, like cheese for instance, and then keep sending it back for more and more because they want it to have sixtimes the original amount, yet bitch when charged for it.
You ask for extra cheese, dressing, sauce, etc., you get twice as much as you would originally have gotten. Keep sending it back and the kitchen will eventually put a lot of extra stuff on it, but not necessarily what you want extra of.

The worst servers in the world are those who are sure they're able to assume who will tip well or not, and provide service accordingly.
had a dude who didnt want to take a 10 top of african americans once. i took it. turns out they were working out a record contract & were savvy business men despite having a baggy clothes thug look. they all ordered steaks and lots of drinks. i let them know i added a grat so they didnt accidentally double grat me. they were grateful i didnt want to take advantage & double gratted the tip anyway. best $ i ever made on one table.
the server who gave up the table justified giving the table up by saying its just because i had boobs and he would not have gotten that tip. i think that may have some truth to it, but i think it had more to do with me giving great service & him making him mind up the second they walked in the door.

A server should never relate their personal beliefs and abilities to strangers.
I just dont get why so many servers are quick to throttle their service because their personal beliefs lead them to believe their customer is cheap.
If I order water at a meal it may be because I dont want to drink high fructose corn syrup and I dont need to have an alcoholic beverage.
Seriously I have been in some very expensive restaurants where I just didnt want wine and I dont like to drink softdrinks. The server looked made at my choice of water.. Until magically I order a 55 dollar entree then all of a sudden they want to do their job. Its very tiring.
Hell just today I went to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch. I placed an order that came with a drink but ordered water with it. I work down the road so we go there a good bit and the waitress was trying to act like she knew us but accidently gave me a water and a Dr Pepper (which is what my coworker generally orders)
The Dr Pepper just sat there while I drank the water.

Yeah I understand just not wanting as much food as opposed to trying to be cheap. Though in the grand scheme of how much food gets wasted, one entrée's leftovers is just a drop in the bucket. It was probably just easier for your server to order a regular portion instead of explaining to the kitchen that someone actually wanted less food. Its a slippery slope allowing people to do that because they're sure as hell going to pitch a fit when they come in next time and have a server who doesn't want to break rules for them.
i understand this. and like i said. ive learned my lesson. i just dont go out to dinner as much, and when i do, i get an app instead.

Agreed.
In fine dining it was tough to balance. When you have tables ordering $100 bottles of wine and the more expensive menu items and the table next to them has two waters Your priority has got to be to the table spending the money. Doesn't mean the next table doesn't get adequate or good service, but waiting tables you had to pick your battles about the order you did things...just the way it goes.
Bartending if i knew a guy tiped well and he needed a drink. Guess where I was headed first.
Sucks, but that's the way it works in every industry. Follow the money.

You have two different things going on here.. In the bartending example you know the guy is tipping well. In the fine dining place you have no clue what they will tip..
I know many very wealthy people that dont have a problem leaving a bad tip but will order things for themselves in excess. You assume they will tip at a high rate. Which I give you is a fair assumption.
You do not know anything about that other diner.
I have seen a tip recorded from Donald Trump where it was something like 10k for a sandwhich and water.
There are many many wealthy people out there and not all of them you will recognize. Not all of them order in extravagance.

Smart move. You're probably much healthier for it. The portions restaurants (including mine) serve are just absurd.

Which would be a reason to split a 22oz steak though..

Yes, that's a completely different scenario than I was talking about.
Any savvy diner will understand a table ordering multiple $100 bottles of wine, will necessitate a different sort of attention than me and my wife on an ordinary night out.
And I'm not talking about folks ordering drinks at a bar, either.

Sure. I got your email so you can take it down

But wouldnt the server feel like an arse if they sorta ignored the pasta eating dude with the iced tea and gave all the attention to the guy ordering 5 bottles of wine?
BTW It was iced tea not water and pasta and not a sandwhich I may have been thinking of another high priced tip I saw. Still same point though:

bad ...bad memories lol.

I waited tables and bartended for so long at many different levels of service I could usually get w/in a couple percent of my tip just after my first conversation w/ the table. Your good waiters can. Call it what you want. Some times you're pleasently suprised and sometimes disappointed but at least 80% of time I could get pretty close.
Your mannerisms? Were you paying attention when I'm talking? How are you dressed? Do you have good english?
If you're selling anything you notice these things and cater to the people who you believe will be most beneficial to you.
ETA: My point is if one table has a $200 bill and they tip a terrible 10% I still made 20 bucks. If the next table has a $60 bill and they tip 20% I only make 12 bucks so I was still better off catering to the more expensive bill.

Ba
This is why when I am at a crowded bar for the first time...no matter how long it takes to get my first round....I tip the serving winch so much it's a sin.....the rest of the night every time I approach the bar I am instantly waited on.

at the establishment i worked at, i made 3% less (of what the bill was) than what i was tipped due to tip out to bartenders, hostesses, and bussers. so, on the $200 bill with a $20 tip, i made, $14 after tip out.
and on the $60 tip for 20%, i made $10.20 after tip out. i prob did a lot more running around for the 200 dollar table and they probably sat longer.
based on the turn over of the table from the $10.20... you still may make more $ for your time getting them great service, getting them in and out and shouldnt neglect them because they order less.

Actually heard:
Me: What's the soup du jour?
Waitress: That's the soup of the day.
Me: I know what it means what it is please?
Waitress: Porcini, I think that is a fish.
Me: How long have you been a waitress?
Waitress: Counting today?
I actually gave her a 20% tip, more out of pity than anything. I never saw her again at that place. You never know when that bad server is a single mom trying to make ends meet or been up all night with a sick baby. Unless a server is rude I give them the benefit of doubt.

Burger King once told me - "we don't got no mo meat". This was at 11:30 a.m. on a weekday at a busy location. No meat. OK.
