Made an order outside of Lake Oswego, Or and received this prompt at checkout. Normally, you tip while checking out, not after the delivery and we didn't receive our order until 3 hours after the order was placed. The following day, I placed an order on UberEats, was prompted to tip at checkout, and received the order exactly 37 mins later, from the time I placed the order and received the delivery. Called a family member in Baton Rouge and they confirmed the same process was enabled, when using Doordash.

Is this sustainable in certain markets?

Yeah idk but if you tip after the delivery the driver doesn’t know this and all the drivers see is the low base so nobody will pick it up unless it’s tied to another delivery close by. If you want your food quick tip at the beginning so they see that it’s worth it and it will get picked up assp.

This situation really warranted this for you?

If so, you're living a blessed life.

I'm guessing they're trying to stop the drivers from cherry picking orders and only delivering the ones they consider good tips.

This is going to put the non or crappy tippers getting their food as fast as the better tippers if they can't see that up front. So this is either going to help everyone get food faster or more likely just screw it up for everyone.

Should have never required tipping up front in the first place. You shouldn't have to tip based on an assumption that you're going to get good service.

It doesn’t give you the option to tip before the delivery in the app. Only after.

Must have just changed. I ordered through DoorDash two nights ago and tipped at the beginning like usual. The restaurant was slow getting the food prepared, so I gave the dasher another 5 bucks for waiting on it when she delivered. She could have made several deliveries with the length of time she waited.

Exactly. I'm surprised you were downvoted for this common sense answer.

This is bullshite. I just tested it. You can add the tip before ordering.

You're not required to tip.

You don't have to.

You're right. Required isn't the right word.

You shouldn't be prompted for tip prior to service. The app would lead you to believe this is your opportunity to tip...take it or leave it.

95% of late, cold or missing food is bc of the restaurant, not the drivers. There would be no drivers if you tipped after delivery bc the restaurant’s performance would ultimately decide their tip.

You can either pay a premium for cold food that takes forever or not be a fat lazy frick and go get/make your own dinner

This is the way I look at it. Tipping before in this context seems like the literal (if not apocryphal) meaning of TIP (to insure promptness/performance). I rarely use DoorDash, but if I'm going to, I don't mind paying extra to make sure that a driver is going to choose my order before a lot of others and get it to me relatively quickly.
