I never really thought about it, but I would be a wreck if I had to cook for people all the time.

Not sure, but you meet some odd people working in restaurants.

You have to be a little nutty to work those hours for shitty pay in the first place.

It's a life filled with off people, odd hours, odd days, and drugs and alcohol.

correlation is not causation. people who are more predisposed to mental illness may be more drawn toward that lifestyle

Yeah, it's a quirky industry fueled by drugs and booze. Periods of boredom turn to anarchy in short bursts and vice versa. Not to mention the pressure that if you're having an off-night, customers are very likely not to return. It can be a lot of pressure.

This topic makes me think of the late Bernard Loiseau & the recently deceased Homaro Cantu. Loiseau shot himself in the head due to a newspaper publication reporting he may lose his 3 star status & Cantu who hung himself before the opening of a new restaurant because of overwhelming financial problems. I think the pressure to execute consistently at a very high level is a very heavy burden on some chefs.

The job doesn't cause it but it does attract people like that.

It's a job that anyone can get outside of chain restaurants due to lax background checks.

It's an extremely stressful career. Professional kitchens are different than your regular run of the mill mom and pop places. I've worked for chefs that absolutely didn't allow any drug use. I've been in kitchens where everyone was stoned all the time too.

Years ago, I worked in 4 and 5 star restaurants in NOLA. The chefs I worked for were bastards and more like Gordon Ramsey than the nice chefs that were paraded on the Food Network for so many years.

Yeah everyone always talks poorly about their experience working in a restaurant.

But everyone I've ever known to work in a restaurant was screwing multiple coworkers at once, partying every free second they had, and having a ball in life.
