Does Hawaiian cuisine seem unappealing to you as it does to me?

Every time I see a Hawaiian restaurant on Food Network, it just doesn’t look good.
It looks like they eat three things:
Spam
BBQ pork or chicken
Hamburger steak and rice with an egg on it

None of the stuff looks appealing. It always looks plain.

Why are you focusing on just three things?
Poke is Hawaiian
Shave ice
An amazing amount of fresh tropical fruit
Locally grown coffee
Macadamia nuts

The Cove on Bluebonnet/Jefferson in BR is actually pretty solid. No frills, but everything I've had has been good - burgers, katsu, bulgogi. Never tried spam though and don't have a desire to.

Those are all kind of cliches.

There are some pretty amazing restaurants in Hawaii and some doing a lot of "real" hawaiian food and some really good elevated versions of it.

Yeah there are a lot of cafes that do the homestyle stuff like that.

But also the seafood options and so on tend to be amazing. Lots of raw preps and so on. The 'bbq' is pretty different and very good.

It seems this is all they eat, according to Food Network.
I’ve never had a Hawaiian feast, other than Poke (which I love).
I’m just basing this thread on what they show on FoodTV.
They just showed a fried slice of Spam, between white rice, wrapped in seaweed. It looked nasty and bland (and I like seaweed).

This is like saying "I don't see anything special about Louisiana food. All I see on TV is gumbo and fried seafood"
(Not there's anything wrong with gumbo or fried seafood)

Hawaiian food looks delicious. I cannot support your take on this matter.

You should watch the places Guy Fieri goes to on DDD. Most of the traditional places have some amazing looking dishes

To be fair to OP, a lot of the shite they show on TV DOES look very unappealing.

I don't eat it often, but I am not going to lie, I do enjoy Mushibi. Local lady used to live there and her husband brings some into work every so often for us.

Toast bread. Melt cheese on one piece of bread. Almost burn cuts of spam in frying pan. Lay two cuts of Spam side by side on other piece of bread (it’s a perfect fit by the way). Enjoy.

We had a local Hawaiian place in Shreveport, but it closed. I wanted to like more than the poke bowls, which were great, but it was just so damned much starch. Mounds of rice and macaroni with fried meats and brown gravy are not my thing.
