Do you tip when you are just ordering food?

I have always wondered who actually tips on the receipt when ordering at the counter and there is no actual food service being provided. What is the etiquette rule here? I went to a burger establishment in BR today and the menu was already priced high. I had to order at the counter and fill my own drink but the person that took my order handed me a receipt to sign with a field for leaving a tip. Does this piss anyone else off or is it just me? Is this a "no-spit-in your-food" fee? I mean what the hell am I tipping for?

Aren't these costs normally accounted for in the price on the menu?

Always 15-20%. If my arse is too lazy to buy and cook food at home, I’m going to reward the people who are making a living to give me a luxury and let me be lazy!

If there is always an option to pay them More then there should also be an option to pay them less.

If this pisses you off you have some issues.

They are, for me personally I will always give a few bucks knowing that tips are shared with staff not a individual who served me or took my order.

And every one of those people was paid a wage to do that job. Tipping culture is arbitrary and absurd.
One of my favorite things about dining in other countries is that I pay exactly what is on the menu. No tip and tax is already included. How we managed to complicate what should be a simple transaction is beyond me.

and most likely struggling to make ends meet, why not leave a nice gesture to say thank you for your work

What’s so special about food service? Do you tip retail workers?

I think it also depends on how much you make. If you're struggling or young it's understandable not to tip. If you've got a 401k and make 6 figures you should tip. imo tbh and more acronyms I can't think of right now

I do not, with retail I am doing all the work except for checking out with to go food since I am lazy like a poster said earlier its just a hey thanks

never. it's a personal policy of mine. Always tip on pick-up orders but if I'm ordering at a counter and getting my own refills and shite, I ain't tippin'.
I figure most places do it because the occasional sucker will feel the pressure of the cashier staring at them as they hand the receipt over and add a tip.

no it shouldnt.
if you think the act is worthy of a tip and cant afford it, dont go and order the food.

I hate the mentality of hey that person has more money than I do so they should spend more and spend it how i see fit even though its not my money
