An appetizer almost every time.

A dessert very rarely, and it's usually because my wife wants it.

I have no idea why this is logically done. Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant knows that the aps are a money maker (food cost vs price)...it's not even some hidden secret.

I am not opposed to a restaurant making money. Maybe they'll still be open the next time I want to go.

It really depends on a lot of factors like the type of restaurant, the reputation, recommended dishes to try, purpose of the meal, menu ....

I don't routinely order apps and dessert when dining out and rarely during lunch unless on vacation or maybe on a business trip. I always look at apps first. Many times, I find them more interesting than the entrees and sometimes, I order multiple apps rather than an app and entree. I love soups, so I look at those. I like a little bite of sweet after a meal at night, usually, but I rarely order a dessert for myself. I will order something to be shared or something I want to taste. Sometimes, we'll order several desserts and pass them around.

If I'm on a "restaurant trip" in which the purpose is trying new restaurants or revisiting favorites, it's likely I'll order an app, entree and shared dessert. Usually can't eat it all, but that's not the point.

Me and the wife usually share an app most of the time. In the case we do get a dessert, we usually eat less of the entrée to make room or skip the app. Sometimes we share one dessert also.

Lucky for you! I'm sure you'll always have Popeye's, as well.

I'm more likely to have an appetizer and dessert and skip the entree....or two apps and no entree. Often, the most interesting flavors on a menu are all in the appetizer section. Entrees are too often just a big hunk of protein and/or starch....they tend toward more conservative flavors and textures to appeal to the broadest spectrum of tastes.

Dessert is only a must if the items are made in house and with skill. I don't bother with delivered-frozen-from-Sysco chocolate lava cakes, frozen cheesecakes, and the obviously prefab shite peddled by too many joints. I'm in an appetizer and dessert rut at Truck Farm Tavern, mainly because the desserts are inventive and appealing.

If the restaurant has calamari I order it 100% of the time.

Never dessert unless it's a birthday.

Depends on where we're eating and the size of the portions they bring out for dinner. If I know I'm going to get a salad, entrée, and both are pretty sizeable I don't usually order an app or dessert.

Sometimes I'll order a couple apps and eat that as my meal. Unless it's somewhere that I absolutely have to have their dessert, we'll usually stop at one of the local pie kitchens and pick up a piece of pie or scoop of ice cream instead afterward.

Who's paying? Does salad count as an appetizer? We might split a salad or appetizer if we are hungry and want to eat something sooner than waiting for entrees. Rarely do we order two appetizers. Restaurant desserts usually don't happen either because we are happy getting a snoball or ice cream after. If the desserts are made in house, maybe we will order but I'll be pass on an $8 cheesecake slice from restaurant depot.

Only 2 deserts I ever order on regularity is a cheesecake slice from Cheesecake Factory, or the crème brulee from Bonefish.

Almost always an appetizer - sometimes a couple as a meal. Occasionally a dessert just becuase there's no room. But if it's some place where I really like the desserts, I'll get one to go. My wide is the opposite. Not big on appetizers, but she orders light to save room for dessert.

I also have a difficult time passing up and in house made creme brulee. I don't usually eat it by myself, but I can make a good dent in it.

I'm cultured that way.

Good topic, we usually share two or three apps especially if there is a salad type app & then split a main.
