I think the person working the takeout is making minimum wage, so tipping is not necessary. I still do it, same for the bartender. I mean whats a couple of bucks?
ETA: I was wrong the food runner does not make minimum wage.

If you get a to-go order from a place that you go to frequently, it is probably in your best interest to tip a dollar or two.
BTW, I usually tip the Sonic kids a dollar because they always appreciate it. I try to show appreciation to the high school kids who are working rather than sitting on their asses playing video games all day.

But I will say that Outback at least does not pay minimum wage to to-go employees ($3.50/hr), so your tips were very much needed and appreciated, even if we didn't do too much. a couple bucks was fine with me, though some people do tip 15-20%..why I don't know.
so its our job to make up for outback sucking?
If its a bartender, I tip about 10%. If its a counter person, then a dollar or so. I never go to chains.

You don't have to. Lots of people don't. Fine with me. For people who tipped curbside, I was thankful. For those that didn't, I wasn't butthurt.

Yay, the tired old thread so the rednecks can show their asses.
As others have said, it depends on the place, how often I frequent and how the service was.
Sometimes you are calling in an order to an server or bartender who has to stop serving other guest who hopefully will tip correctly. $2.50 to $3.50 an hour these folks are making. This is is the way the game is played. Either tip and take care of these folks or fcking just go to taco bell drive through and deal with the nimrods who work there as that is all you deserve.
Of course, some kind of places and some situations don't deserve it, but I am generalizing here.

Not a redneck by a long stretch. I just don't see the point of tipping to-go orders. If it's curbside that's one thing but if I call in an order, get out of my car and come inside to pick it up I don't see the need to tip.

No. I'm about done with the whole "everybody expects a fricking tip" bullshite. I'm a good tipper when I get good service, which means doing more than the basics of your job. It seems like everywhere I go there's a fricking tip jar on the counter. The other day I went to the shooting range to shoot skeet, THE SHOOTING RANGE, and there was a tip jar at the register. Has the whole world gone insane?

I don't tip. I'm doing the work that I would otherwise be tipping for. If tips went to the kitchen, I may do it. But they don't, and I'm not going to give someone a dollar for not doing anything. And I don't feel guilty or cheap about it, because I'm not cheap and there's nothing to feel guilty about.

Everybody seems to have a flippin tip jar now a days. I dont understand the places that have a tip jar sitting on the counter and the employees didnt do one bit of "service" Good service gets a good tip, standing around like a moron gets you shite.

Yeah, like Smoothie King. I'm paying $5 for a non-alcoholic drink and you want a tip? For what? Making my smoothie is exactly your job description.

I thought a tip was basically a financial "attaboy" for service above and beyond your regular job description and requirements. This attitude that everything deserves a tip is bullshite.

I think I'll put a tip jar outside my apartment door and see what happens.
