Do California Grapes Have Smoke Taint from Wildfires?
quote:

Last month, as wildfires once again tore through California wine country, the immediate concern was protecting people’s lives and property (even if some Bud Light had to be sacrificed in the process). But as the smoke proverbially settles, vineyards and wineries have to deal with the impact these fires had on the winemaking business, and now smoke is a literal concern.

A major difference in this year’s fires compared to other recent disasters in the area is that they arrived earlier in the growing season, meaning more grapes were still unharvested on the vine, increasing concerns over smoke taint—the unwanted flavors that grapes exposed to smoke can impart into finished wine. For vineyards that produce their own wine, worries about smoke taint can lead to the daunting choice of whether to use fruit or not. But the issue becomes even more complicated for growers that sell their grapes to outside winemakers if those producers attempt to reject potentially tainted fruit.

Is this why my wine smells like a cigar sometimes?

If the grapes are damaged in any way they won't produce a vintage.

This topic came up on a recent Milk Street podcast hosted by Christopher Kimball. His guest, flavor chemist Dr. Arielle Johnson, explains how smoke from wild fires affects wine.

It starts @25:44 LINK worth a listen. She breaks it down in under 2 minutes.

There's a Pinot noir called Oregon Solidarity that was made by a collection of Oregon wineries (including Willamette Valley Vineyards and King Estate) after Wagner cancelled contracts with a bunch of growers in 2018 (like 5 days before harvest) citing smoke taint as a cop out.

The wine is pretty terrible, but it isn't because of smoke.

Yep, but as the article points out, growers who only sell their grapes and don't produce their own wine get fricked the most. An entire year of work to get to harvest is wasted as they don't see any profit or even a recoup of expenses.

Yeah. Atlas Peaked got crushed by the 2017 fires. A lot of vines were lost up there and I doubt that production was even close to being recovered by now.

Yeah even if they replanted in 2018, it would still be at least another 3 years before they make any decent wine.

I wondered the same thing about their rice that is now being harvested. They say the fields are full of ash. Your sushi might have a smoked flavor soon.

They should use that line in their marketing

Contacts in Oregon are saying most vineyards will had smoke issues and air quality is delaying harvest.
