Dining board: A-hole chef or A-hole customers?

Here’s the email I received with the subject line ... humiliating experience:
“I had the most humiliating experience the other night. My friend and I were told to "vacate our table!" We went to Jonathan's the Rub, having been there before and enjoyed the food. We were celebrating our mutual birthdays. We arrived at 6:30 p.m. and were seated at the only table for 2 available which was next to the front door. Oblivious to the crowd around us, we brought a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine to enjoy as we ate our food and talked. We shared a dessert and were suddenly told to leave by Jonathan. He stood about 15 feet away and announced this to not only us, but the rest of the diners around us. All this before receiving our bill! Apparently the wait staff felt that we were not moving out fast enough and Jonathon decided to make a point. We were out the door by 7:50 p.m.” Signed Cathie Petak and Maryellen McGlothlin

Let me start by saying Levine sounded like a pretty good guy on the phone. And, as he tells the story, it sounds like he was between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The tiny restaurant was “slammed” with customers and many people were waiting, including a large party that would require that one particular table. The ladies had finished their meals, paid their check and were -- in their words and Levine’s -- “oblivious” to the rest of the dining room. The ladies’ stay, Levine counters, was two hours and forty minutes and that’s when, at the request of the staff, he stepped in.
I dunno about this one. I’m all for leisurely celebrations of family and friends over a meal, but I’m also keenly aware that when restaurants are super busy that it’s not the time to linger. Besides, who wants to have a bunch of hungry people staring longingly at your table?
What side are you on?

when a restaurant is packed as hell and other people are waiting for a table and you have already finished and paid for everything you are going to pay for, you need to GTFO. If the restaurant is not busy, its another story and they probably wouldn't mind.

Well, if they stayed from 6:30 to 7:50 like they stated and the bill wasn't presented to them I vote for the customers.
If they stayed for 2 hours and 40 minutes and lingered after paying the bill I'm with the chef.

And 2 bottles of wine. I think the way it was done was tacky and classless, but I don't have a problem with them being asked to leave. Chef's have to make money. They do that by flipping tables as quickly as they can. If the table is still ordering food, they won't be asked to leave. Eat ya food, and get to stepping.

I think you need to read the ENTIRE post. Chef says bill was already paid.

There's contradicting stories. Did they or did they not pay, was it an hour and twenty minutes or almost three?

Is it more likely 2 chatty women took 1hour 20minutes to finish two bottles of wine and food?
Or 2hours and change?

The chef probably underestimated the amount of time. 2 chatty drunk women = at least 4 hours.

My only issue was, the post said they brought their wine.
Sort of shitty to linger in a crowded restaurant over something you brought in yourself.
That being said, a restaurant is being unresonable in DEMANDING to turn a table in less than an hour in a half. I think 2 hours is about where it might start being seen as an issue.

If 2 women drank 2 bottles of wine then they probably couldn't tell time anyway.

Holy shite! I didn't even notice this. I think they are miserable bitches now. Right in the middle of dinner rush they want to sip on wine not even purchased at the restaurant. If they paid nothing but a corking fee and appetizers, I'm ok with him booting them.

Tactfulness was obviously not the owners/chefs forte. Used to be in the bidness, I don't think I would have handled it that way. Anytime you need a customer to do something, you give em something for free. Like, if yall would vacate the table here is a gift certificate for a free dessert next time you come in. Normally that will do it. Or if you wouldn't mind and finish your visit at the bar, the first rounds on me.
