limited food choices.
I think there were just fewer restaurant options in general, not because Piccadilly was a barrier to entry.

Nobody else ate at steak and ale?
Posted on 10/1/12 at 12:54 pm to madamsquirrel
I remember the one on Vets.
I don't think my folks ever went to eat there though.
It was a cool little building though.

Lafonda's--we used to eat there all the time. Have been a few time recently. Everything tastes the same.

We went there once, I remember going to Western Sizzlin a few times though. My first exposure to Texas Toast

Steak and Ale was about the only place you could get prime rib.
Ground Pati, Lumms boiled in beer Hot Dogs, Wesley's, Nooleys, CottonnClub, Mirror Steakhouse, Top of the Tower at the old Republic Tower, Cloud Drive and Florida Street.

There was a Chinese Inn on Florida and one on Airline -- they were owned by two different brothers, as I recall.
The Hong Kong Inn on Greenwell Springs was a different joint.
All were really good Chinese places -- better than anything I know that they have in BR these days.

We ate at Piccadilly all the time because back then it was good. They probably had the best crawfish etouffee in South Louisiana barring someones grandmothers kitchen. But we also ate every Friday night at The Village, Jack Sabins, The Place, Bob and Jakes, Joeys, Little Italy, Gino's, Europes, Don's, Camelot Club, City Club, BR Country Club, Phil's Oyster Bar, Ralph and Kacoos, Mike Anderson's (when both were worth a shite)Chinese Inn among others. There was and still is plenty of variety. Apparently you didn't get out much.
Don't forget Shakey's pizza Martini. :-) I was too young to drink beer with dad there but that was some good pizza.

Where was this?

At the front of Rebel Shopping Center where the Shopper's Fair was. (Which is now Baton Rouge Community College)
There also later on was a Dairy Queen which turned into a daiquiri shop.
Burger Chef, Hoppers...

All I know is that any time I taste gumbo with okra in it, the taste reminds me of that Piccadilly gumbo I had when I was 8 and I don't like it.

I think this thread has things backwards frankly
growing up as a child in BR, there were tons of locally owned options n the 70's/80's...many already mentioned
frankly I hate getting anywhere near BR because of all the chains that seem to have closed some of the the locally owned joints....look they may have closed for other reasons but....
the 70's/80's might have been BR's food scene era

I'm the one who knows REAL gumbo, Otis. That okra business hails from Africa. I prefer the French/Cajun version which is the real deal. I don't need a thickener like okra. I can make a real roux.
