Dat Dog Lafayette selling its building

And will close if they sell it for $2.15 million. LINK
Only ate there once when they first opened, they had maybe 10 customers at 12pm on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Surprised they lasted this long. That was a horrible location for them at the end of Jefferson in such a huge space. If it was just a closed-in shack/garage like the original one on Freret, it would do well around river ranch or Ambassador/Kaliste Saloom.

"The building is underutilized and the owner wants to see all reasonable offers," the listing states. In an interview with the Advocate, CEO of Dat Dog, Paul Tuennerman said, "We made a tremendous investment in downtown Lafayette and are not eager to move on.

Wasn't the owner talking about trying to franchise and build locations all over Louisiana/Texas and shooting for 20+ location within ~5 years or something like that?
Can't really say I'm surprised, this seems like they dumped a ton of money into that building and judging by the slim crowds are barely turning a profit, if making a profit at all. We'd go from time to time but always felt it was a bit pricey for hotdogs, 2 hotdogs, an order of fries, and a couple beers always seemed to end up being $30+.
That building is also huge, 2 stories I believe with a ton of unused space. I remember when it first opened they had bands in the back sometimes but that fizzled out.

Can't say I'm surprised by this.
Building is cool but far too big for what they need.

Dat dog doesn’t own the building, they are renting

Pretty sure that's incorrect, they own it.
ETA: Tax assessor shows the property is owned by DDLafayette LLC with a New Orleans mailing address.
From a KATC article- "The building and the business are separate entities, he said. The restaurant is using 25% of the building."

A hot dog concept in today’s raw, edgy and organic health food landscape is not going to be that successful in my opinion

Used to be one of my fav stops when I came back to the city but seems to have gone to shite. Last time I went got a dog topped with crawfish etouffee....they brought out a dog topped with orange liquid...no tails...I sent it back and got back another dog with MORE orange liquid...no tails. Haven't been back and wont be back

Portillo's of Chicago would make a killing in Lafayette, although NOT at that location.

Hot dogs are for the golf course and the ball park

Portillo's is awesome but it's way more than just a hot dog joint. Tried to eat at Dat Dog once. The service was so terrible, by the time we got our beers we decided to go somewhere else.

That's why it would do well here. The service is great too for such a big operation and the volume of product they move .

There was a guy that would hang out at my old watering hole. He worked at Dat Dog and was transferred to the Laffy location. He was a freak with big ideas..I think he ate tide pods..

I've considered ordering having some food shipped from their website.

This is one hell of an operation. They move some serious product.

ITs actually very good, however, they are incredibly selfish with their etouffe. My last dog like that had maybe three crawfish on it, and you could barely tell it had any sauce on it.

I’m surprised any location is still open much less multiple
