Cut food waste at home by sniffing and tasting, urges new campaign

Do people not already do this? I rarely look at best by dates. Have meat and milk go bad days before, and some stayed good days after.

My wife thinks that food magically turns bad one day after the expiration date. It’s certainly frustrating at times.

I do this for dairy products and red meat.

Not just that, I some items don’t have dates like fruits and veggies and the nose is a useful tool. Heck, when I buy pineapples it papayas, I sniff them. The nose is your friend.

My wife lives and dies by those stupid dates. I don't even read them. I have a three point checklist I go through
Does it have mold? If no, move foreard.
Does it smell vaguely like it should? If yes, move forward.
Does it taste like it should? If yes, eat away.

I ate oikos yogurt a few weeks ago that expired in 2019.

Nature is pretty cool. Most spoilage bacteria will grow on your food and produce an odor warning you. The smell test is legit in many cases, but not all. If only all foodborne pathogens would do this...

My husband too - and he’s a cook!! But things don’t usually last too long at our house anyway, unless I buy too much of something.
