I find Maker's Mark off-putting, and that fact alone has kind of scared me away from higher-end bourbon. If you consider Maker's sort of the "entry level" good bourbon, then I guess I didn't like what I was entering.
If I want a nice drink of whiskey that's a little pricier I'll drink scotch.

For a good bourbon that won't break the bank, try Widow Jane 10 year. I have had many more expensive whiskeys and Widow Jane bourbon, at $60/bottle is the best bang for the buck there is.
If you want smooth, try a wheated whiskey, not a bourbon. There are many good wheateds out there(fact is, Makers Mark is wheated).
As a side note, I went back home to visit the brother a few months back. He introduced me to Louisiana made Sugarfield bourbon. I was impressed so much that I brought a bottle back. I really wish I could find it here.

Probably 90% of those who drink the high dollar bourbons do so because they think it’s cool. If you gave them a blind taste test between Makers Mark and Evan Williams they couldn’t tell you the difference.

I may have to look into that. Usually when I get a bottle of bourbon it's during the holidays and usually lasts me quite a while. However I've been doing pretty good about this not drinking thing for months now. But I have a close personal friend that would appreciate it as a Christmas gift rather than my usual tradition of getting a bottle to last me between Thanksgiving to New Years.
There's been a couple years I didn't make it to Festivus.

Oh you can tell the difference.
That said, it's a lie to say that you can't find good bourbon for a reasonable price. Basil Hayden is one for instance.

The Crown Royal commercial where the young urban man brings a bottle of Crown as a gift to his mom creeps me out. He toasts to “the best mom ever” She’s wearing a wedding band but it’s just the two of them.

Allow me to rephrase/clarify:
Blanton’s is popular. It is too popular to meet the market demand. The allotment of bottles isn’t ample. The “crunch” falls on the average guy buying it. You can buy a glass of it at many restaurants- they deal in enough volume that the supply chain favors them getting enough bottles of it rather than, say, you or me. You can buy it if you’re lucky or willing to pay marked up prices, usually.
My compromise: I’ll drink it when I’m out, but I’m not going in search of it or buying it for more than it’s worth. I like it a lot, but not enough for that.
The downside? I won’t complete my collection of toppers. I can’t share a glass with a buddy over dinner/a game or give it as a gift. Hopefully it eventually becomes more available.
My first experience with it:
I wasn’t really a bourbon drinker, but I loved Scotch. On the morning of my wedding day, a groomsman and I were doing some last minute shopping for booze. I spied a bottle of Macallan 12-year, which was my “special occasion” favorite drink. There was a bottle of Blantons sitting next to it. I asked my groomsman who, at the time was more into bourbon than me, if it was any good. He said yes, so we nabbed it. I had no idea it was relatively hard to find. I wound up liking it better and wound up down the bourbon path.

Widow Jane is good stuff but it has gone up in price. It was $75 at Total Wine this week so I passed.
