I have a family member that's having a 60th birthday party that I won't be able to attend. They don't have a drink preference really. What's a good bottle I could send as a gift?

WhistlePig 10 is a great rye, Balvenie 12 is a great Scotch, Monkey 47 is a great gin. All under $100 though

If you can find it, High West's Midwinter's Night Dram. Should run you about $120.

Red Breast Cask strength. Probably the easiest premium whiskey to enjoy. Plenty of better ones out there if they like the taste of alcohol, but that Red Breast goes down so nicely.

Being that generic is a tough one to do, but I'll give it a shot. I think when buying a gift for someone without any real knowledge of what they normally like to drink you are best at sticking with the better known top shelfers that normies buy for show. If you buy something that's higher value but lesser known, you run the risk of a "what is this?" reaction to your gift.

As far as spirits go, your safest bets are scotch and tequila. Their higher end stuff are seen as more elegant than others. The bourbons that fit this qualification are just impossible to find, so forget those.

I recommend the following:

Scotch:
Dalmore Cigar Malt
Macallan 15
Glenlivet 18
Glenmorangie 18
Glenfiddich 18
Dalmore 15

Irish:
Jameson 18

Tequila:
Patron Gran Reserve
Clase Azul
Don Julio 1942

Grand Marnier does some special releases as well in the 100-200 range that are a generic crowd pleaser. This wouldn't be a bad option either.

Caol Ila 18 year if you gave me that $200. Or 2 Stagg's if I can find them.

If he likes scotch, particularly the more peaty whiskys from Islay, then get him a bottle of Lagavulin 16.

You can go to Total Wine and get something in the glass case that says $200

They usually have
Kentucky Owl batch 11
KO st Patrick’s day edition
WP 15 (closer to 300)

Or get a bottle of Four Roses single barrel select off the shelf and call it a day, but still have enough for a nice bottle of vino also

If I knew somebody was buying me a nice bottle of something, I would hope for a good Scotch. For some reason I prefer a good glass of Scotch versus Bourbon.
However, I haven't had a $200 bottle of Bourbon i have $100 bourbon and scotch. I just prefer sipping on scotch
