Lots of hating on Jay's.....Must be an acquired taste, because I like most of the food at Jay's a lot.
I like it as well but I grew up eating at the one on Govt Street which is the only one I go to. The tall black gal that works in there and I went to Junior High and High School together and she's been working there since then.
I only eat the bbq beef anyway. On occasion the bbq pork but I normally save that for Hi Ho.

Louie's is one of the least clean places you can eat, but the food isn't bad at 5AM. I can't count the number of times I've seen different bugs just chilling there.

I dont care much for Jay's only been to the one on Government though. Its ok bbq but BR really doesnt have any good BBQ places anyways.
I thought Pinetta's was the cleanest place in BR?

I know one of the health inspectors that works the Baton Rouge tri parish area. He and a couple of coworkers were the ones who found the bodies of dogs and cats in the feeezer at Chings a few years back. Ya'll remember that Chinese joint on Government Street? When they were getting ready to shut Chings down, the owners pleaded with them not to shut them down because the dogs and cats were for their family and not the customers. Of course they didn't buy into that crap and shut them down. He told me that the restaurant in Baton Rouge that they have to warn the most about keeping the cooking areas clean is Copelands. I can believe it because one of my neighbors that I lived near when I lived in BR used to work there. This guy was the definition of filth.

1. Before the Copeland's in Lake Charles closed, there was an article in the American Press that a rat ran across the dining room in front of customers.
2. Jays is TERRIBLE. The last time I went there they deli sliced my brisket sandwich meat, weighed it, then I had to put on the BBQ sauce. Impressive.

My family owns Burger Delight in Gonzales, and, if cleanliness was a factor, they wouldn't do a shred of business.

I once worked at a now non-existent restaurant in Baton Rouge that had a rodent outbreak. This was actually considered a rather upscale place (and the location now houses another rather upscale place).
It's hard to say what the funniest part of this situation was:
1. Watching two Vietnamese dishwashers chase the rats into the bus station with frying pans;
2. Seeing a rat give birth in the dining room next to an occupied table on a busy Saturday night; or
3. Watching our own version of Rat Survivor, for about a week after the exterminators came and put this big box trap in the dry goods pantry, as it slowly filled with the rats, and they, thereafter began to dwindle in number inside the box, with the last one standing ending up about the size of a chiuaua, by the time they came to retrieve it.

This is why I eat with a fork in one hand and a rolled up newspaper in the other.

The last time I ate at Pinettas two roaches come out from behind a picture the minute our food was brought out. It isn't pleasant when you're trying to eat and the roaches are playing peek a boo. We were lucky though. The couple at the table behind ours got an added bonus. During the course of their meal, a roach fell from the ceiling and into the young woman's food.

Just as a generalization, sushi restaurants are very clean.

Gugs, for having your location in an older, and unattractive strip center, Dempsey's looks like it has thrived really well. That's probably a testament to good food, good service, and a well maintained place.
As for Jay's, I can probably see why some people are hatin' on them. Their sausage, bbq chicken, & beans (hell, that's almost 75% of a bbq menu) makes you wonder if the owners have ever tasted their own food. Those 3 items need to be totally changed & upgraded IMO.
I love their bbq sauce (it's not a sweet bbq sauce), and find most everything else on their menu to be really good...My gf & I go to the one on Sherwood, and the people their are very nice, & the place is very clean.
