City Pork Owner Opening Pizza Restaurant on West Chimes

The owner of the popular City Pork restaurants is opening a pizza parlor on Chimes Street in about a month.
City Slice Pints & Pies will go into the space at 164 W. Chimes St. that had been formerly occupied by The Bayou, Reginelli’s and Bleachers, said Stephen Hightower. The restaurant will sell whole pies and pizza by the slice, along with Italian hot beef sandwiches, meat and cheese trays and Italian ice. City slice also will have 14 beer taps.
While there have been a number of restaurants come and go on Chimes Street in recent years, Hightower is bullish on the neighborhood. He points to the continued success of longtime tenants such as Highland Coffees and Louie’s Café and the current expansion of The Chimes.
“When I was at LSU 20-something years ago, this was the zone,” Hightower said. “This area needs a rebirth. I’ve always been a believer in taking a location that should be prominent and making it good again.”
Hightower said he discovered the location while he was looking for a kitchen to provide food for the City Pork Deli & Charcuterie that opened this spring in the LSU Design Building.
“There are so many synergies that work out so well,” he said. The meats cured, smoked and prepared in the Chimes Street location, can be put on sandwiches at City Pork LSU or put on pizzas at City Slice.

This is the first idea in a while that may actually survive at that location. Bleachers couldn't have had more than 5 customers since they opened. I'm shocked they lasted as long as they did.

That place needs to go back to being sketchy dive bars. Those were fun.

Before that when it was Mahoney's they seemed to do ok for that location. There was never a time that it was completely dead, granted there was never a time besides football games that it was packed to the gills.
ETA: It has been at least 4-5 different spots in the last 6 or so years.

Pee Wee’s pizza was awesome...I’m sure City Slice will be even better!

I think the property owner basically forced Mahoney's out to do his own bar (Bleachers).

Yep. Nothing has survived there, which to me means there has to be another reason beside just having shitty businesses. I'd imagine the rent in that locale ain't cheap and it takes a LOT of business to be profitable. Still, it seems like it should be a great location for bars and restaurants. Campus on one side and several apartment buildings on the other. Hell, less than 100 yards away you have one of, if not the most popular restaurant on (near) campus.
Clearly it isn't going to work as a bar. A pizza place tried their craft their once before and flamed out. Maybe selling by the slice works. Pizza is pretty cheap (if you don't get too pretentious), so the margins could be decent. And you would think some drunk kids leaving the Varsity might be inclined to get a slice.
Others can provide more info than me, but it's always been a mystery to me why nothing seems to survive on that street

Reginelli's was there for about 9 years before closing that location. I wouldn't say they flamed out. Just opened too many locations and closed one of the less profitable ones.
I think Mahoney's could have made it but apparently the rent prices there are stupid.

I completely forgot a new place opened there. I never heard a single word about it, good or bad, so I guess its not surprising they didn't make it.

No exaggeration, I probably passed Bleachers a few dozens times either at lunch or dinner and not once did I see a single person there. They even did a shitty paid article in The Reveille once calling themselves the “hot new hangout” or some shite like that. Just horrible.

Anyone try City Slice yet?

Went tonight. I think this place will do extremely well. Solid beer and cocktail selection as well.
Had the Duck Bacon and Romano pizza and it was phenomenal. 5/5.
We also had the one that is basically a clone of the Bou-Ray from Red Zeppelin with boudin and jalapenos. It was decent but I wasn't crazy about the spicy red sauce on the pie.
Next time I go I'm going to have to try the pulled pork pizza.
I'll definitely be going back, they opened up the floor space so there is plenty of seating.
Duck Bacon
Boudin Jalapeno

No joke. Can we please get a SERIOUS pizza spot that doesn't charge 25.00 for a personal size pizza with no toppings?

Pizzas were $15-19 for a 16” pizza. Well worth it. Single slizes were $5 for a person pizza sized slice of pizza.
