I acknowledge that wearing out 4 Akorns in 7 years is not a great cost model. I take care of them, cover them etc... I just use them a lot, and they rust through the bottom so I am sure the climate has something to do with it. I have never bought a more expensive ceramic bc I am worried I will wear though that as well. But I will probably give it a try when I am feeling flush.

It's a good grill that will produce practically the same results as BGE. And after a few years, if it needs to be replaced, buy a new grill. Every few years u can get the new cool grill on the market. If you buy the Egg, you're still gonn be browsing the web to see what grills or out there.

They had them for $500 at Costco N.O. Also a couple of pellet grills for around the same price.

my akorn is 6-7 years old now. only issue i see is the bottom tray right above the wheels is starting to rust. i need to remove the rust and paint it. It stays covered under my porch. it has served me well.

I have had an akorn and now have a big kamado joe. The Akorn lasted for 3.5 years, with a cover, outdoors on a deck. The latches on the tray eventually rusted and broke.

As far as cooking, I modded the Akorn to make sure it was sealed properly. Bought a nomex gasket to replace the crappy one the Akorn came with and bought high heat (permatex) silicone sealer to go around the bottom vent. That cost about 20 bucks total. Once I did that it worked as well as my Joe does now.

Just to update I picked up an acorn on a swap shop for 100 bucks. Only thing wrong with it is the temp gauge.

For that price what the hell

A friend gave me a good deal on his used Akorn. I use it twice a week on average- it's a solid first smoker IMO. I know it won't last forever, but I've gotten some great practice with it and will use it until I'm ready for the big leagues.

I bought the Louisiana Grills Pellet grill from Costco last month. I've done several butts on it, used it to reverse sear some steaks, and a few other things. I absolutely love it. And for $500, it was a great deal.
