Thinking about getting one. Cost new is 300. Way cheaper than BGE. What is the major difference in the two.

Would this be worth replacing a weber kettle with?=

I’ve never used an Akorn, but if it were me, I’d spend $200 more and get a ceramic grill... you can get a Pit Boss for $500. There’s no way than metal akorn performs on the level of a ceramic kamado.

Plus, in 10 years, that ceramic will still look brand new while the metal grill is rusted out.

My BGE is knocking on 8 years old and still looks damn near like it does out the box.

Just thinking about the average person. Most I know with one have had them break down around ~5 years or so. I also have a cheap Old Smokey that shouldnt have lasted very long and it is 15 years old, so just depends on how much effort you put it.

But I also have a 20 year old BGE that sits in the rain and is in perfect shape. That obviously isnt happening with an Akrorn, though I think theyre good grills and if it is in the price range youre looking at, go for it.

I have had Akorns for about 7 years. I think I am on my 4th one. They are great to cook on. I can grill steaks on high heat or smoke a brisket all day. I use it a lot, 4 times a week on average. I cover it etc..., but in the S. Louisiana climate and using it a bunch, they just don't last that long. Still, I like them. Much lighter and easier to move around than ceramic grills.

To each their own but you’ve completely proven my point. I prefer to spend a little extra initially on a product that’ll last longer.

Not to mention the $$ you’ll save on lump using ceramic vs metal.

Not true for everyone. As I mentioned, have a friend who has one and he keeps it covered and under a covered patio area and its fine. Had it maybe 5 years. Uses lump charcoal like my Kamado.

This is my resource for all of these type of grills

Ive been wrong before but I have a really hard time believing that an akorn
Burns as efficiently as a ceramic grill. Ive done 16 hr smokes using only half the firebox of lump.

I’m not sure how much better ceramic is over the Akron but it uses the same airflow for temp control.

You can burn at a slower rate, as the ceramic is gonna hold the heat much longer than the metal. Gonna burn less charcoal over a low and slow cook.

The metal Akorn is 2 layers with insulation between.

It’s actually very efficient for what it is. I had one for about 6 years before the bottom started rusting out but I didn’t take the best care of it.

I have the ceramic pit boss now and I’m happy with it, but the Akorn does cook very close to ceramic grills for a lot lower cost. I initially bought it because I wasn’t sure I would like the kamado style and it was a cheap tester. I loved it.

Which one does Costco sell? I have a primo XL and the Costco one I was looking at the other day seems to be constructed just as well for a way better price

I bought my pit boss at Costco but they have sold primo and some others at times.

I think I paid 500 or 600 for my 24” pit boss, and it came with stand, cover, heat deflector stone, and side folding tables.

I've had a $250 smoker for 6 years. Still looks and works fine. This "green egg or nothing else" outlook is silly.

No one here said that. The Akorn May work great for some ppl.. maybe some don’t feel the need to drop 500+ on a pit..? I just prefer to buy once and be done with it. I have friends who always laugh At the price of ceramic pits, but I’ll see them drop 200-300 on a new gasser every few years.

Different strokes for different folks I reckon... but if I was buying a pit on a budget right now, I’d take a hard look at pit boss over a metal pit.

I bought a PitBoss at Costco on Thursday, it was $600 for everything you listed, though I've seen where they go on sale sometimes to $500 and as low as $400. I'm waiting for my brother to come give me a hand tonight to finish assembling it, I had no idea it would be that heavy. Like mentioned though, I was going to spend $300-$400 on a gas grill and decided to just buy the PitBoss at $600 and be done with it. If/when the stand rust I'll build something to sit it in.
