Headed down to catch up with an old friend and his family in nola tonight and they invited me to dinner at bayona. Anything special about the place? TD search shows everyone suggesting it for brunch, but how about dinner recommendations?

I'm assuming I'll be okay with a nice polo? Planning on walking around the quarter/bar hopping after. Thank you for your help

One of the earlier "chef driven" restaurants of New Orleans. I find it is good, if not really anything spectacular. Get the sweetbreads.

I love me some garlic, that soup sounds pretty good for a starter and veal sweetbreads for dinner

I've never been there, but I've a friend who's opinion I highly respect that's been in the restaurant industry all his life, knows his shite, and was once asked what his favorite New Orleans dish is. He said that it was Bayona's Quail salad.

Crispy Smoked Quail Salad with Pears and Bourbon Molasses Dressing 14.00

Please report back after your meal.

It's been my in-laws favorite for years, and have been there at least a half dozen times.

Susan Spicer is one of the original New Orleans super star chefs.

The Saturday lunch special is a great deal, and you get to taste a lot of different things (small plate thing).

The menu always has several new dishes, and they rotate a lot of regulars. I always go with waiter recommendations and specials. Ask what is good on any given night, and match that with what you are in the mood for at the time.

You won't regret eating there. Please report back!

Haven't been in a while, but the rabbit was excellent.
Nice polo is fine - pretty laid back place.

One of the best French Quarter restaurants and the patio area in the back is very nice if you get there early and want a drink

Update: Despite the slow service, everything was great. Started with the quail salad then the veal shortbreads (one of the best things I've ever had), other friends got the garlic soup, sweet potato bread, and red snapper (very good). Drinks were a little too sweet and small for the price.

Everyone I was with had a costume on for dinner and the staff there seemed to enjoy it. Overall a great place that I'd recommend

Glad you enjoyed your meal. Bayona is one of those places that was trendy when it first opened because the chef, Susan Spicer, introduced some excellent dishes.
Those dishes are now classics since so many people order them repeatedly. This makes menu innovation more difficult, and as such the food critics focus elsewhere, and restaurants like Bayona become kind of an afterthought.

Consider John Besh, you don't hear as much about August and Luke as you do about his most recent restaurant. Which of Besh's restaurants do you think serves the best food?
