Burner for boiling crawfish question.

I have a burner like the one above. I tried to use it one time to boil crawfish and cranked it up pretty high but it started burning the paint off the burner, so I just went ahead and switched back to my single jet burner. My question is, if I turn it down a little bit, will it bring the water to a boil in a reasonable time? (120qt pot)

Tell your wife you’re doing research, and go outside with a bottle of liquor, a stick lighter, and some music. Then report back to us how it worked out. Won’t hurt you to just go boil water and find out.

And if you have a jet burner, why even worry with that anyways.

Becauase this thing is exponentially more quiet than the jet burner.

Yes they are, dont worry about the paint burning off, mine doesn't have any paint on it, I need to repaint it.

So you’ve boiled crawfish on yours? How long for a rolling boil?

I have a natural gas burner, takes a little longer than a single jet but its quiet and I dont have to get propane for it.

Wont hurt anything to boil a pot of water and check the time.

I have one of those and it's slow. I am going to pick up a jet burner soon.

I’ve got the double jet bayou classic with a new regulator on it. Does the job. The regulator that it comes with sucks. Well worth the $15 or so to upgrade.

Same here. Though i went a little more on the upgrade and got the 60psi one. That thing sounds like a damn jet engine and runs through propane like no one's business.

Fun as hell though.

I've got the same. The included regulator on mine gets a 100qt pot going in 15 minutes. Mine came with a 20 or 30 psi regulator. I forget which.

Burn it off. When finished, let it cool. Spray with black paint from HD to prevent rust. Rinse ~ Repeat.

What type of black paint? Wouldn’t it just burn off as well?

It'll work fine for boiling if you have a high-pressure regulator on it. It's not as fast as a jet, but you're only adding a couple minutes to your time to boil.

What PSI is considered high pressure?

I think 10 psi and above is considered high pressure.

I've got two double jet burners. A bayou classic with a 30 psi regulator and a king cooker with a 10 psi.

I actually spoke to a guy at king cooker who told me anything more than 10 psi on a double jet burner was over kill and not needed. I didn't buy it so i tested both burners.

The guy was right. The 10 psi got a half filled 100qt pot boiling in about 15 minutes. So did the 30 psi.

Yes it will. You could use a high heat paint, header paint from a Auto parts store etc, but IMO it would be a waste of money. Just use any inexpensive paint to prevent rust until next time. Then again if you aren't concerned about rust don't worry about it.

That's for frying fish or making gumbos and jambalaya.

Stick with jet style burners for boiling seafood.

The trick is getting it back up to a boil as quickly as possible once you've put the seafood into the pot.

You can overcook your crawfish if you can't get it back to a boil soon.

If you have to use a non jet style burners, be sure to cook to color, not wait for it to come back to a boil.
