Bought salmon today sold as "fresh" from Whole Foods that smelled awful when opened at home. Has anyone found a market in BTR where the fish is often actually fresh?

do you know where salmon comes from?

it sure as hell aint nowhere from around here so it will never be fresh when bought locally.

i think it was more of your choice of meat then the markets ability to have something fresh for you to buy.

For salmon? I wouldnt write off whole foods. You got unlucky. I’ve never had bad salmon from ralphs rouses or winn dixie. Tuna on the other hand….

Guy beat to death in their parking lot recently

Alexander’s market has good seafood, Costco has the best salmon,
I have been ordering from wild fork, it is frozen but is flash frozen and vacuum packed, have had quite a few different varieties of fish and all have been fantastic, my favorite is halibut followed by wahoo

I've been doing salmon sashimi with salmon from fresh market in Perkins Rowe. Their tuna is good too

FYI, all "sashimi" grade fish is frozen to rid parasites

In the food industry, Fresh means not frozen. It doesn’t mean it was swimming yesterday.

That is incorrect, sashimi grade means nothing, nonstandard, just a marketing term

I had a friend cook some salmon for dinner one time. She had two filets, one from Whole Foods and one from Costco. The one from Costco tasted noticeably fresher.

Costco salmon has won many blind tests by experts , even when compared to wild caught salmon

Usually Whole Foods is very good for that. So is Albertsons, Calandro's, Fresh Market, Alexander's, Rouses, etc.

But I seriously think Costco has the best over the local or regional stores, and I'm not sure why. But it's been like that when we lived in Memphis, Pittsburgh, and Chicago too. I guess they have some really good suppliers.

They sell a lot of farmed salmon which comes from both coasts.

Their salmon usually looks the best.

Yeah probably.

ETA: I'll say that it's much harder to get good quality, fresh gulf seafood or even fresh farm raised catfish in Chicago or Pittsburgh than it is to get good quality salmon.

The fisheries in the Pacific Northwest and the upper Atlantic probably benefit from the major retailers being based in the big urban markets in those areas.
