Definitely agree. The first part is a very large problem because even when we do try to make improvements, people just shite all over them.
Example: Tin Roof may not be great beer, but it is at least a step in the right direction for BR. The same goes for the food scene. A lot has changed recently in both areas and people are actually attempting to improve those cultures.

I know there are like 5 or 6 to open next year across the state, but this is a new one to me

I hear you, but my point in choosing something at the opposite end of the spectrum is that population is not a proper gauge.
The thread is about microbreweries and distilleries, neither of which are necessarily localized.

Yes and no. And I would agree that population is not the end-all be-all factor for this, but it's not completely irrelevant either.

Agree. But if there really are 20 in Ashville, it is not much of a factor at all.
If most of them are basically restaurants it is relevant because traffic is necessary for business.
If they are really microbreweries, population is nearly irrelevant.
Sweetwater is in a city of 6 million. Terrapin is in a city of 50,000.
Jack Daniels is in a town where the population of the whole county is 6,000.
And thank you for entering into an actual discussion like 2 guys at a brewpub.

I know of two 'in the works' in BR, but neither is downtown.

Sounds like it... although it's not impossible to have a distribution brewery with a taproom that serves food.
