Bourbon/ SM Scotch for Christmas Gifts
I have 1 son and 2 sons-in-law who all have at least a passing interest in nice bourbon/scotch. I'd like to give them each a bottle of nice stuff for Christmas ($100/bottle max). Any suggestions? Any unique options to make a nice presentation?? Also, I'm receptive to other distilled brews other than traditional. Something out of the ordinary. (As you can probably tell, I'm a novice at this). Thanks in advance...

Google top scotches under 100 and you will get some great suggestions with ratings and flavor profiles.

Friend,

In most years I would tell you to skip the whiskey and get them an ornament. This year I will suggest Ritual .Although I have not had it I support the spirit behind it.

I would suggest you ease up on your continued position on alcohol and others who don't agree with you.

I feel you have more Baptist than you willing to admit.

This for scotch.

For bourbon I’d go Elijah Craig Barrel Proof.

Last year I gave bottles of High West Double Rye to my sons. Excellent whiskey and you can find it as well. I thing around $40 or so. I gave store select bottles but I haven't seen those around lately. The regular bottle should be a big hit.

I’d recommend going to a few local stores and try to get them a barrel pick.

For scotch get them an Oban 14 or The balvenie previously suggested.

For bourbon get them old forester 1920 or 1910 or Elijah Craig barrel proof.

Good choice

Balvenie 15 Single Barrel Sherry Cask is another good one.

Lagavulin 16 is my huckleberry.

re: Bourbon/ SM Scotch for Christmas Gifts
Just off the top of my head, some really good Scotch for under $100:

Kilchoman Machir Bay
Kilchoman Sanaig (they have some other great bottles for a little over 100 but this is the bottle that made me fall in love with Scotch)
Ledaig 10
Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask
Balvenie 12 Double Wood (I prefer the 17, but it’s over $100)
Lagavulin 16
Lagavulin 8
Laphroig 10
Ardbeg Corryvrekan
Ardbeg An Oa
Ardbeg 10
Talisker 10
Kilkerran 12

I'd be wary of Islays like Lagavulin or Laphroaig.

I love them, but the smokey, peaty flavors may be a turn off if they have only passing interests in scotch.

Just a thought.

ETA: The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is well under $100 and very good.

Oban 14

This! I have the 18, which is about $150, and it is what made me learn that I can love scotch. I'm sure the 14 (I believe in the $90 range?) is a great buy as well. I'm still learning scotch, but that Oban has been unbeatable in my limited experience.

I personally am on the fence with these. While I like them plenty, I find the black pepper on the finish is a bit harsh. I guess it all depends on your sons' tastes.

My suggestions are:

4 Roses single barrel ($45)
4 Roses small batch select ($55)
Bakers single barrel ($55)
Pinhook Rye Humor Cask Strength ($50?) can't recall price
High West Rendezvous Rye ($65)
Angels Envy Rye ($85) *this may get some pushback as bourbon purists aren't fans. I love it and know others who do as well. It's finished in rum barrels which give it a nice maple smell and taste. Excellent stuff!

Scotch will be standard more expensive than bourbons, since they have to age longer to get their flavors. The price difference is not an indicator of one being better than the other. Great bourbons are found in that $40-60 range, and scotches in that $70-100. My point is that don't just grab a scotch because the higher price means better flavor. It really all depends on the person, because scotch and bourbon are distinctly different.

Also note the following suggestions that are bound to pop up and ignore them completely. Not because they are bad choices, but rather because they are impossible to find:

Blantons
Colonel EH Taylor
Stagg
Stagg Jr
Weller (all of them)
