Blue crabs, boil and reheat or try to keep alive?

Trying to catch some crabs this morning for a crawfish boil on Friday.
Would I be better off boiling fresh today, storing in a ice chest covered in ice, and then reheating in the crawfish pot?
Or trying to keep alive in a ice chest on top of ice with a wet burlap sack on top for 2 days?

Throw them in a feezer if you have room.
If not, 2nd choice and pack with ice. They will still be alive if ice is on top.

I have a big igloo ice chest that I put 2 Coke crates upside down to keep the crabs out of the melted ice. Cardboard or burlap, ice, keep drain open.
I also have kept them in my old garage fridge for 3 days on the highest setting and they were all alive 3 days later.

We boiled some yesterday and almost all the legs and pinchers came off during the boil. Any idea what causes this ?

Ice down your crabs in ice water right before you put them in the pot. Crabs will keep their claws.
Also not adding them to a rip-roaring boil will prevent it from happening.

Pack crab tightly, right-side up, elevated from bottom, cover with wet newspaper or burlap, then cover that in ice. Keep chest drained so crabs aren’t submerged. You will have some deadloss but shouldn’t be bad this time of year. If you boil now, don’t try and reheat, cold crabs, like shrimp, are excellent.

OP you just need to keep them below 50 degrees. Freeze a couple 2 liters of water, put it at the btm of an ice chest, cover with an old beach towel, put your crabs, another old towel, thin layer of ice, leave the lid open. Hardest thing to do is keep females with eggs in them alive, they tend to die quicker.

Those upside down crabs will die very quickly.
Get a big ice chest, make an ice slush, dunk them in the slush for about 5 minutes. Pack them neatly in an ice chest like we said above. They will be fine till friday. Leave them in the shade. That's a nice crabbing trip. Where yall went? I might go try to catch me a couple dozen tmrw.

We are heading back now and I’ll get th into a bigger ice chest packed right. Boiling some tonight.
