Big Cheesy leaving Magazine St

Similar thing happened to a bar in Arabi. They had a kitchen in the back. They wanted to open a courtyard behind the restaurant and serve food out there to all ages. They built seating, put up tvs, had plans for swings, etc. ATC came in and shut down the plan, saying that the entire "location" including the back area and outside the back area, is licensed as a bar.
Obviously I don't want kids in a bar. But, I feel like this is something the state of LA needs to work on. It may take legislation. But provided there is a physical barrier, and perhaps security, I feel like these hybrid places should be allowed to exist.

For the past three years, the grilled cheese sandwich restaurant The Big Cheezy ran the kitchen at Henry’s Uptown Bar. That operation closed Wednesday (March 21). “A few months ago we were suddenly informed that we would no longer be allowed to serve customers under the age of 18,” the restaurant posted on Facebook. “When it was time to renew our lease it became clear that the space on Magazine Street is no longer a good fit for The Big Cheezy.”

I Goto Henry’s quite often and only had big cheesy once. The place is a whole bunch of meh. Would be cool if they got a bbq spot in that place.

Surprised it made it this long

Isn't there a door between Henry's and the Big Cheezy? They have separate entrances for sure. Seems like some government overreach.

Of course they should, and they often are, provided you pay your "protection money". The ATC, like everything else in Louisiana, is run like organized crime and is just as corrupt.

There is. I walkes Through it once with a sandwich expecting additional seating and ended up in a bar. Guess I didnt Realize where one ended and one began. The door should have been a clue though.

Yeah. Sounds like someone didn't pay up enough for sure. But this is what happens when groups like the ATC have almost unchecked power.

They obviously don't want to be in New Orleans; there are plenty of other places they could open that aren't in a bar. Who the hell opens a grilled cheese place in a bar anyway? That's something that kids love.
"Hey guys, we're going to open an ice cream shop that also serves booze. Sorry, no kids allowed."

quote:I agree. It’s horrible to think the children of New Orleans would be exposed to such debauchery like eating in a restaurant located next to a place that serves alcohol. I pray their souls can recover and their innocence be restored.

I was there yesterday and notice they had moved out. The bar maid told me they just decided to move locations.

I've never seen kits at Fat Harry's.
Cooter Browns - yes, I've seen kids there. Maybe it's classed as a restaurant? I don't know.

I've definitely seen kids eating at Fat Harry's many times..always during the daylight hours, but they let them in there

So it looks like Fat Harry's has both a restaurant liquor license AND a bar liquor license. Maybe that is the difference?

You can’t have both at the same location. If your a bar you are not allowed anyone under 18 to be in it. If your a restaurant kids are fine. You can apply for either but to keep restaurant status you have to keep your food sales to what the ATC considers a restaurant. I can’t remember the percentage though. Used to be a bigger deal in BR because bars couldn’t open on Sunday’s but once that changed restaurant status wasn’t so important.

Kids in bars is a right of passage in this city

I'm pretty sure you can have both. I believe it is a Restaurant - Conditional permit that allows you to have under 18 during certain hours and over 18 after.
