been a few years but off chef Mentuer I used to get a nice Vermacelli bowl with cilantro and grilled shrimp
not the nicest neighborhoods but the food is choice.

For "In-Town" Viet, is Magasin far and away superior to Jazzmine, the place at Riverbend (Carrollton/St. Charles)?
Jazzmine's been my place when I don't want to go way out East and to the Wank. Only became aware of Magasin relatively recently when we were going for dinner at Maya's and saw it there.
LGD becoming a destination for me. A few good spots around there.

Without a doubt

What are the opinions of Doson, the place across from Angelo Brocatos (and, formerly, Pho Tau Bay)? I've never been there, but always notice it.
Also, it's a bit of a different animal, but Cafe Minh is around the corner from Brocato's. Thoughts on this place?
I understand there was a place with a similar French Colonial Vietnamese theme in the hotel at Lee Circle, but I notice it's something else now (it was called Tamarind). Meant to try it, never did.
Went to Minh several years ago when it was first opening

I like Cafe Minh, but like you said it's a different animal. Doson is meh IMO.

I work for Magasin, if you guys order a sandwich (banh mi), I would recommend you add an egg to it. Also see if you can put pork and chicken on the same sandwich. Their appetizers are on point.

No love for Metairie's Pho Orchid and Pho Nola? We enjoy both of these a great deal.
I like all the food, but love pho so much, I rarely order and just nibble off of my wife's plate.

Places are ok. Orchid's pho is better than Nola's by far. Only thing that is really good at pho Nola are the sandwiches. I like to get the soup and sandwich combo when I eat there.

Pho Tau Bay or Tan Dinh. 9 Roses is good but I refuse to deal with those bitchy servers. I can handle rude but I won't accept being told they brought the wrong thing because that is what my husband ordered (when I did the ordering). Then I saw the same server blame a customer the same way on another trip when I decided to give them another shot. Too many good places to accept that.

Pho orchid is better than pho hoa... Not as good as dong phuong. Although the dumpling duck sandwich appetizers are fantastic at pho orchid.
But if we are talking specifically pho then my vote goes to Tan Dinh. When I first saw the pho I thought it was a bit yellowish in color, which I automatically contributed to mixing chicken in with the beef bones, which flavor wise is a no no in my book, but was surprised at how good it was. The best I've had in Nola.

I liked Pho Nola the one time I went. I really liked their rice noodle soup and Banh Mi.
Still need to try Pho Orchid; that place is always packed whenever I pass by it.

I like Pho NOLA's lunch special.....
1 Ban mi plus a small Pho' for $8.00.
Very cost effective and tastes pretty good.

Pho Orchid is my go to lunch spot because I work close. It isn't the best in the city but I haven't had anywhere that much better. The guy that runs it helped the people set up Magasin and a lot of the menu is based on it.

Does anyone know the spread they use on the bread for banh mi? Is it just mayo?

ladytiger118, they're not as packed as you might think. It's a good sized restaurant, with a lot of tables and seating area. If it's mid-evening when you go, some of their parking lot is used by people from Mo's Chalet across the street.

Think it's far more interesting than plain mayo. Not as creamy either.

It taste like mayo but it is oily. It's good though
