I don’t know, but there are PLENTY of excellent Oktoberfest beers made right here in the USA and sold in Louisiana these days.

By no means the best, but two worth tasting are:

Ayinger Bräu Weisse
LINK /
(it's better than Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse)
LINK /

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen
LINK /
(smokey taste, you probably won't drink a bunch of these, but necessary to try once)

I'm a huge proponent of American craft beers but the one thing the craft beer industry here has yet to achieve is to produce an O'fest beer anywhere near as good as an authentic German one. My recs would be Hacker-Pschorr and Paulaner.

A couple of good recommendations in the previous posts.

Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I have learned first hand that my two favorite German bock beers will no longer be carried in Louisiana by anyone: Spaten Optimater and Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock.

Good luck finding existing stock. See you in Houston.

I’d i had a dream list of bottles that can be found domestically it’d be:

Ayinger Märzen half liters
Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen
Weihenstephaner Festbier
Augustiner Edelstoff
Augustiner Maximator

Paulaner Oktoberfest
Sierra Nevada/Weihenstephaner Oktoberfest collab

Brooklyn Oktoberfest
Urban South Oktoberfest

Costco has Paulaner Octoberfest by the case in BR. Check there if you are nearby one.
Warsteiner Dunkel is a favorite of ours as well.
I would put Sam Adams Octoberfest up there with many of the best in class.
Strangely enough, Modelo Negra is a Dunkel(dark) style that came from Vienna. It is very good and reminds us a lot of what we could get in Munich.
Just peruse your local, good, beer aisle and find out what you have in your neck of the woods.
I cried a little bit, while in Texas last week, at the large selection of German beers that we don't have here but are regularly stocked at Kroger, HEB and the like. It was depressing.

After years of taste testing, it's my opinion that Ayinger's Oktober Fest-Marzen is the best Marzen you can buy here in Louisiana.

Edit: Rauchbier tastes like the Devil's piss!

If you are in Natchitoches, it may be worth making a call/drive to Brewniverse on 70th Street in Shreveport.

He has a pretty solid selection of Oktoberfest beers, both German and American made.

I think smoked beers(rauchbier) are kind of like IPA's. You either love them or hate them. I love them, but only in small amounts. Some can get way overpowering on the smoke. I hate IPA's with the fire of a 1000 suns.

Slight correction here. Modelo Negra is a Vienna style, not a dunkel. Dunkels are dark and very malty; Viennas are amber, not quite as malty and crisp on the finish. You're absolutely right though that Modelo is a good one. Vienna is almost a dead style and pretty much the only place you can find them is in Mexico and the US.

Well, considering there isn't really one style of Oktoberfest beer, I can see how that can be difficult, but I get what you're saying.

The Sierra Nevada collaboration one is really good for that style of an oktoberfest beer.

Sierra Nevada has teamed up with Weihenstephan to make their Oktoberfest and it is outstanding.

I'm talking about the traditional style, aka Munich, not the newer pale beer they serve these days at Oktoberfest (festbier or wiesn).

Yes and no. From the Modelo website: "Brewed longer to enhance the flavors, this Munich Dunkel-style Lager gives way to a rich flavor and remarkably smooth taste."

You are probably thinking of the Especial. It is in fact an amber. The Negra(black) is a Dunkel-style from a Vienna recipe that was nearly identical to the Munich ones across the border. Also yes, the Vienna is pretty much defunct everywhere but the US and Mexico. It is still much closer tasting to what we get in Germany than most.
