I was not a big fan of last years offering. I haven't tried this year's since we are stocked up on Sam Adams and Paulaner at the moment.

You are probably thinking of the Especial.

I don't think I've ever had the Especial; I'll have to try it sometime. Negra doesn't seem like a dunkel to me but I guess you have to go with what they claim it to be.

The Negra(black) is a Dunkel-style from a Vienna recipe that was nearly identical to the Munich ones across the border.

That's what's confusing to me. Vienna lager is very similar to Munich lager (which is the traditional O'fest style) but neither of those are dunkels.

Appreciate the info.

I'm talking about the traditional style, aka Munich, not the newer pale beer they serve these days at Oktoberfest (festbier or wiesn).

They've only been serving festbiers in Munich for Oktoberfest for the last 28 years. But apparently American breweries still haven't gotten the memo, as they only brew marzens as Oktoberfest.

Festbiers are a lot more enjoyable to me than marzens, but good luck finding any. The Weihenstephaner version is the only one I've been able to reliably find in Louisiana. Paulaner brews one, but they don't send it to the US, as the Paulaner Oktoberfest they send here is a marzen.

The 2017 Sierra Nevada one was much more of a festbier than the 2018 one. The 2018 version is almost like a blend of a festbier and a marzen. It's not as sweet as a marzen, but not as crisp and floral as a festbier.

Yeah, it's next to impossible to find festbier/wiesn here in the states. To me, there's nothing special about that beer but Marzen is pretty amazing. Definitely a desert island beer for me. So I can understand why American breweries have been trying (and mostly failing) to replicate that style. That said, it's heavier than wiesn so I can also understand why some people prefer it.

One year at GABF, I had tickets for the Thurs night session and the Sat afternoon members session. So I decided I'd spend Thurs night trying all the Oktoberfests at the festival in hopes of finding one in the same orbit as German ones. No luck. None of them had the rich maltiness of a marzen. I've had homebrews that were in the ballpark but never a commercial beer.

Actually, Dunkel is generally a style or type of lager. Dunkel means dark in German so it is describing a beer style and color for the most part. We were asked at several bars and restaurants whether we wanted the regular or the Dunkel when we ordered a beer in Munich. We tried both of everything and just liked the dark better for almost all of the ones we tried. Marzen is very similar to the dunkel style as well. It can all get very murky when you jump into the Dunkel style.

Yeah I know what a dunkel is. I'm a beer judge. I'm just saying that Negra doesn't seem like a dunkel to me. And neither Munich (Marzen) nor Vienna are dunkels either. Those are different styles.

I was bummed this year about that. Last year's was so good. This year's version regressed.

A local place up here had some Weihenstephaner Festbier on tap last week and I may have imbibed a little too much.

Sierra Nevada/Weihenstephaner Oktoberfest collab

Brooklyn Oktoberfest
Urban South Oktoberfest

I haven't had the Brooklyn or Urban south yet this year, but last year they were amazing.

Sierra Nevada's is good again this year. Not great but good

St. Arnold came strong again next year.

Agreed with all of this. And considering how good the Weihenstephaner Festbier is, I was expecting a lot more from the collab. I was really let down.

Märzen is March. It is a style that is one of the last beers brewed before the weather warmed too much and beer brewing was halted. It is not a dunkel but it is damn close. Even judges disagree on what a “true” dunkel is. All that aside, give me an Augustiner Brau Dunkel over just about every other beer on the planet. Watching them tap the wooden keg an getting some of the first pours off that keg at Augustiner Keller is a life altering event that I recommend everyone do as many times as you can. It ruined us for pretty much every other beer. Another aside, they are one of the only brewers left that still store and serve out of wooden barrels.

Yes I know.

Yes I know this too.

There's some overlap but not much. One is dark (dunkel) - up to 28 SRM, one is amber - 17 SRM max. The dunkel is much more intensely malty than the marzen.

Well no, not really. It's pretty well defined what the differences are.

Not usually a big Sierra Nevada fan, but that Octoberfest brew was outstanding. Does anyone know where I could pick up a six pack of it outside of Cosco?

Yes and no. From the Modelo website: "Brewed longer to enhance the flavors, this Munich Dunkel-style Lager gives way to a rich flavor and remarkably smooth taste."

You are probably thinking of the Especial. It is in fact an amber. The Negra(black) is a Dunkel-style from a Vienna recipe that was nearly identical to the Munich ones across the border. Also yes, the Vienna is pretty much defunct everywhere but the US and Mexico. It is still much closer tasting to what we get in Germany than most.

TBH, it's all good. Modelo is a surprisingly solid brewery. When I went to Las Vegas, it was pretty much the only stuff I could find other than BMC, and I found all of their offerings really hit the spot.

I regularly see Augustiner Edelstoff at Dorignac's in Metairie.

(I think Augustiner-Bräu is probably the world's greatest brewery. So, cheers to your exquisite taste!)

Hear, hear. You may not have much luck schooling Mountain Tiger on this topic. But I appreciate your appreciation for beer at its finest.
