I don't know of much along 71. If you're able I would work on timing your trip to stop for lunch in Houston or wait until Austin.

Would rather go to a small podunk town BBQ

That Zimmerhanzels looks like the perfect type of place

Black's BBQ in Lockhart if you can drive a little off of 71

Yeah, might add another 45 minutes to your drive but Lockhart would give you several options.

If you must go 71 I would just hit up Hruska's in Ellinger.

If you want BBQ I would stay on 10 and turn North in Luling and either hit up Central Market in Luling or Blacks in Lockhart. Bring Cash if you go to Central Market.

Hruskas for kolaches. Market Street for meats. Decent brisket and great butcher shop. Choice cuts.

Is Brenham doable? The original Truth BBQ is there and LJ's.

Brett's BBQ Shop in Katy (maybe, maybe not 'out of Houston') just off I-10 is very good but sells out embarrassingly fast.

If you want something really good, avoid Peter's (next to Hruska's). It's tempting because it's convenient, but it's not that great. Only good thing is that it's pretty cheap.

A little out of the way, off I-10, but Luling City Market.

Billy’s in Bastrop is good too, never been the Back Porch.

As some have said if you want to step it up, take a small detour to the original Blacks in Lockhart, but if sticking to your route Zimmerhanzels is the way to go. I drive between Austin and Houston every single week, so I’ve hit all these little places along the route.

If early on your way home Sunday, stop at hruskas for kolaches. If later around lunch time, push through to Praseks in Sealy and fill up your ice chest with meats after you eat a burger. Excellent lunch stop.

Would much rather stop here than Bucee's in Katy or Luling.
