Scottish friend just texted me saying Burns Night(???) is coming up and where I could find haggis?

quote:

haggis, the national dish of Scotland, a type of pudding composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep (or other animal), minced and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep's stomach and boiled.

Any clue where I might be able to find these, or a suitable substitute?

TIA.

Robert Burns is the National poet of Scotland

Best thing is to look online, even though haggis in the USA is missing lung and something else we aren’t allowed to eat here …

I’ve had Haggis in Scotland and it is pretty damn disgusting. You and your friend would be better off just eating some boudin or maybe ponce if you’re wanting a stuffed intestine.

Ponce may be the closest substitute. Seasoned and smoked sausage stuffed inside the stomach. Smothered in onions and gravy is the real deal.

I usually buy from LeJeune's in Eunice, priced around $10

Stop being dramatic. I was there for a week and ate haggis just about everyday. Had its served traditionally with neeps & tatties and even had it for breakfast. But then again, I also enjoyed blood pudding and cullen skink so I may be the outlier.

I’m not being dramatic. I’ve spent a lot of time in Europe and have given it a fair effort. I dont care for it at all. It’s dry, metallic and generally just unpleasant thing to eat imo. Cullen Skink on the other hand can be enjoyable. Though there are many variations some can be not so good.

Go to a place that makes. Ordinary and have them make you an extra big boudin.

It'll look like Haggis and taste much better.

The picture in the original post looks way more like boudin stuffing than ponce to me.

Call Borques in Port Barre off of 190 and see if they have any green or smoked ponce. Closer than Eunice.

Because Haggis is traditionally eaten on Burns Night.

I have a bottle of Robert Burns scotch I drink on Burns night but I skip the haggis.

Here is a haggis song for ya I Ate the Haggis

There also may be a Burns Night dinner near you hosted by local Scottish clubs. They serve haggis at those dinners and have people recite Burns poems.

Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o’ fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer,
Gie her a Haggis
