the reason BR has always had good Lebanese is because there has always been a sizable Lebanese catholic population in BR. My godfather is a mansur and he has the biggest family I've ever seen. There's thousands of ethnic Lebanese in town

I'm one of them, related and/or distant kin to many of the ones you infer. Descendants of Lebanese Maronite Catholics that came to Ellis Island 100 years ago.

Vasken of Serop's is actually Armenian, and many of the other "Lebanese" restaurant owners around town of other nationality.

I'm a CHS alum, a few years behind you.

I would say the Indian restaurants in Baton Rouge are more than OK. I do wish we would get a Korean or Ethiopian place. With all the international grad students at LSU and Southern, it seems to me it will be a matter of time.

I remember being so bummed out when Ronnie told me she was closing. A real treat was when the old lady with the gold tooth came and prayed over your table.

Veronica/Ronnie's was very cool, great food, wasn't she once partners with John(wife Erin?) who had Aladdin Cafe near Coursey & Sherwood, he had managed Cajun Cafe in Cortana for Vasken in late 1980s before Aladdin.

Loved Jamaican & Lebanese on the same menu.

I'm in favor of people using "gay" and "retarded" for the simple reason it pisses off the PC crowd. But I prefer "hole challenged" and "shortbus".

And the reason Baton Rouge doesn't have a better selection of restaurants is because of our lack of restaurateurs who 1) have the money and 2) the talent to pull off a concept unique to Baton Rouge. I'm talking a large full-service restaurant. Any hole challenged shortbus can lease out a space at a stripmall and start a restaurant. The best we can hope for is Darden to send us another chain restaurant like Bahama Breeze.

This is a both a valid area of improvement for BR cuisine and a sign that BR cuisine is honestly in a good place. There is a LONG list of sub-million person metro areas in the US that are lacking good Ethiopean food.

The closest thing I've had to Korean bbq here is at The Cove Hawaiian Grill on Bluebonnet and Jefferson.

Perhaps my favorite Baton Rouge restaurant was a killer Jamaican/Caribbean place called Ronnie's Ribs located next to Hi Nabor on Jones Creek. The food was incredible.

is it still open? I have eaten there several times before when in that area

that jerk chicken was fantastic ...

BBQ in this town is a damn joke !

Ain't that the truth. I still think a few large pits behind a store front model, like in austin, would fair well here.

I'll just go to one of the 150 greek/lesbian places. You can keep your grilled water buffalo and Jerk Face Chicken.

RIP Ronnies Ribs.

Yeah, I remember some sort of ties to Aladdin. Veronica's husband is Jimmy. He would come in after his work in the evening, turn off the awesome Jamaican music and blast the evening news which absolutely ruined the atmosphere. At the same time he would bury his face in a newspaper. For whatever reason, the guy couldn't get enough of news.

And yes, the Mom going to each table and telling customers to pray was sort of strange. Some folks find a need to talk religion all of the time, but while I'm enjoying lunch is not the time. She was a sweetheart though.

I usually went with her lunch buffet just because she was a small operation and had a lot of really good food out already. When I heard she was closing, I ordered the chicken wings because people here raved about them. They were perhaps the best wings I've ever tasted.

I too was in there weekly Kajungee.

She said she would still do house catering and gave me her card. I never had reason to pursue that option though. Maybe I should contact her to see what she's up to these days.
