Barbecue: Boston Butt or Shoulder

I've always been a Boston butt guy when cooking my own. However, I have learned that my favorite barbecue joints all use shoulders. This year I had one of those joints cook one up for me for a July 4 get together. It is unbelievable. Next time I cook barbecue myself it will be a shoulder on my Traeger grill.

They're the same thing.

This has to be a troll, right?
I mean I guess the shoulder can also include some of the front leg but it's essentially the same thing.

I prefer the butt over the picnic shoulder

Due to the popularity of Boston butts, picnic shoulders are sometimes more cost efficient.
This is why you will see them used by barbecue restaurants. Less demand on the retail market which translates to a lower market value.
On average, picnic shoulders are .20 - .40 cents cheaper per pound than butts, when you can find them.

I’d think this was a joke if you weren’t a Traeger guy

I rarely see shoulders, but I only buy Butts under a $1 per pound on sale. That might be changing with current price trends. I'd kill for some shoulders, $.20-$.40 cheaper than butts!

I have a Boston butt on the smoker grill right now for family gathering tomorrow . Second one I have cooked in the past two weeks. I like a shoulder too, but rarely cook them. IMO there is little difference and the butts are usually cheaper here.

Nope. A pork shoulder consist of the butt portion and the picnic portion together. In most stores you can find both pieces separated. More butt portions than picnics. Rarely do you see a whole pork shoulder in common retail stores.
