I had a friend who ruined perfectly good steaks by trying to overdo the Egg thing.. Super high heat to sear (like 2 min/side), then lowered the Egg to like 250-300 and cooked steaks another 5 min or so. Guess what? Steaks almost well done.

Eh. Guys who buy BGE's probably like their steaks well done anyways.

Not sure I understand the hate some have for people who use them... Don't like the BGE? Know what? You don't actually have to use it.

Now, my dad wants one for fathers day. So I'm looking for a 24" with a table set up and other peripherals. Anyone got recommendations? Not sure if any of the tables are different depending on vendor.

I have the BGE and knowing how to get the most out of it really does make a difference in the consistency of results.

I do cook steaks on it sometimes, but last night I cooked steaks on cast iron with a propane burner and finished in the oven.

I have seen a lot of enthusiasm for the BGE, but have never seen or attended an Eggfest. If you love your BGE enough to load that thing up (it is heavy and fragile!!) in your truck and haul it to some festival, chances are you are a total fanboy and you are going to be a bit irritating.

you're right about the overpriced part but i wouldn't say that grilling on a BGE is the same as grilling on a regular 'ol barrel pit.

My wife bought me a large BGE about a year ago. There were some start-up lessons to be learned.

But now I really enjoy it. I don't have any illusions that I'm a master chef but the BGE is very versatile, seems durable, low maintenance, and user-friendly. We could some very good food on ours.

Most anything that can be grilled, smoked, etc can be done on a BGE and conversely you can ruin anything as well. It's a tool, nothing more.

I don't really hate the BGE. I have never used one. I really can't substantiate the claims made by the users at the eggfest though.

I can tell you my next smoker will handle a 150 lb whole hog though which means the BGE is absolutely out.

I've had a bunch of grills and smokers over the years. My BGE is by far the best of them all. It's really not even close. Don't like em? Don't buy one.

I'd like to try a Primo or Komado just to see what the less expensive versions are like.

lolz

what a bunch of suckers.

My uncle can make a smoker out of an old hot water heater and get better results than some amateur on a BGE. Like has been said.. it's the person, not the apparatus that makes good food.

Not really. I promise I can out cook some of these BGE fanboys using my $100 Weber. And yes that includes smoking meats as well.
