My wife had the beef broth version, and it was just as bad. It took a lot of doctoring up in order for it to be decent. They didn't bring any basil or jalapenos or any other traditional accompaniments, either. Definitely wouldn't order it again.

Weird. I've had the beef broth, flank, shrooms and grilled mustards add ribeye 2x the last 2 weeks and it was delicious and came with what you said you didn't get.

At High Hat, I got an order of tamales, the pimento cheese burger (medium rare) w/ a side of sweet potato salad, and a side of pimento mac n' cheese. I really enjoyed the meal as a whole. The tamales were as good as ones I've had up in the MS Delta in the Greenwood-Greenville sector. However, I will add that while the burger was OK, I didn't think it was anything special

Interesting. They have one of the better burgers in the city. Cowbell is the best, IMO, but High Hat is a solid #2.

To be fair, however, all pale in comparison to burgers I've had in NC

How was the burgers there different?

To me, it doesn't seem like there is much you can do with a burger. If it is cooked correctly, the burger has a char on it, and the bun is toasted then that is most of my requirements for a good burger. High hat has all of that covered.

The only thing they don't do is grind their own meat which does make a difference. I prefer the burgers I grind at home from brisket, chuck, and/or short ribs.

. Started off w/ the wings, which I had heard many great things about. They did not disappoint, some of the best wings I've ever had (and I'm from the Northeast so I've had plenty). The sauce reminded me of the Thai Rib sauce from Zea. Honestly I could go at Happy Hour when the wings are 1/2 price, get a couple of orders of wings, and be completely happy.

They were okay. But basically, once wings reach a certain level, they're pretty much all similar to me. I should have tried something else to get a better feel for the place.

Finally, I had the pho -

The majority opinion seems to be that pho is not their strong point.

I also agree that the prices are steep.

IMO, they are tad pricey for the level of food, based upon my one experience there.

I've always considered it a damned nice burger. But to each his own.

Nice review.

I find it interesting that despite being warned that the pho isn't their strong suit, everyone continues to order it. There entrees are where the place shines.

That being said, that banh mi looks pretty sad.

I know VOR said they didn't have a special app yesterday. That's too bad, the best thing I've had there was an app special.

I like those little cracker things that come with the Banh Mi. It's a nice little touch and the duck is really good.

Might go over for lunch today and try the pho.

Next we took a ride to Adolfo's for the main course, but there was a 90-minute wait

Should've waited. The crab meat and corn cannelloni is best thing I have ever put in my mouth. Veal Ocean is not far behind.

I know it... only reason I didn't wait was because I had my 5 y/o with me.

Ate at MoPho for the first time. The wings truly are excellent. The cripsy exterior gives way to a juicy, volcanically hot interior. The sauce was a titch too sweet but otherwise these wings do set the bar quite high. The rest of our meal was good, not great. Everything seemed a little salty. Price for two entrees, the wings, a glass of wine and a beer was $49 before tip.

I know there was a review thread but didn't see it.

Brett Anderson gave a full review for anyone interested.

Excerpts:
quote:

The dishes labeled "Specials" lean hardest on the skills Gulotta developed working for John Besh at August. The meat from roast lamb neck, as imposing in its girth as an osso buco's veal shank, falls into green curry, where it communes with bits of golden beets and smoked tofu. A pile of Cedar Key clams obscures a shallow pool of braising liquid. You'll want to dive into this briny broth, marbled with pepper jelly, mint leaves and ribbons of lamb lardo, with the two savory "beignets" — look like breadsticks, taste like achiote paste — crossing the top of the bowl. An assemblage of spring peas and carrots might be both the most abstract and delicious vegetarian dish in town.

quote:

Best bets: Pork shoulder spring rolls ($8); crispy chicken wings ($10); pepper jelly braised clams ($18); MoPho's peas and carrots ($15); roasted lamb neck ($23); pho with oxtail and mustard greens ($10); rice with fried eggplant and tofu ($9); condensed milk cake ($7).

I'm telling you. Only problem with the place is the entire menu doesn't receive equal attention. IMO

Take that FWIW.
