Are candy bars sweeter than they used to be?

I do not eat candy very often. As a younger man, I used to love a crunch bar. I went through a pretty serious Whatchamacallit phase in high school. I enjoyed a Baby Ruth. The chocolate was smooth and pleasant. Now I eat a piece of chocolate and it seems offensively sweet, almost tangy. I never had this issue before. Are my tastebuds changing for the worse? Did they do something to the chocolate? Is is a corn syrup thing? I don't think crunch bars were ever organic or fair trade or whatever, but I do not enjoy them anymore. Is this a midlife crisis?

Short answer is yes, the ingredients and methods have changed substantially since the 90s, drastically affecting the taste and texture.

I dunno about sweetness, but pretty sure they replaced all the natural chocolate with a seed oil chocolate mixture. So maybe they increased the sugar concentration to mask that.

I'm thinking it's more that, once they started holding back all the actual cocoa content, all you have left to taste is the sugar.

Yes. I’m in Disney this week and they sell 2 versions of some of the candy. Milk chocolate covered pretzels and peanuts and then milk chocolate FLAVORED covered pretzels and peanuts. The ingredients list in the flavored shite was at least 30-40 items long. The regular just had 5 milk chocolate ingredients and pretzels and was $3 more. I got those and they were delicious. Tasted homemade.
Our food industry has become a shite show.

It’s the ingredients.
Just got back from 2 weeks in France and the difference in just about everything is astonishing. Chocolate is night & day.

I remember going to the gas station in the 90's and getting either a slushie or coke and a candy bar. Nowadays that's way too much sugar.

It's almost all sugar and artificial crap these days to mimic chocolate.
It's crap and not worth eating.

According to the FDA, American “milk chocolate” only has to have 10% chocolate liquor. The FDA allows any candy to still be called chocolate below that threshold, so most candy bars did that. Today, most American chocolate candy is overly sweet, cheap, waxy garbage. The only decent American candy bar is the HEATH BAR.
