"This begs the question, why does food in Mobile suck so bad?"

I don't know. You tell us. I don't think it's that bad personally. There are plenty of decent local spots. Just no fantastic places that really stand out.

All the places on the Causeway are serviceable. There are a couple of decent places downtown. Mobile just sucks in general so I'm not sure what people expect.

Why limit yourself to the most desolate stretch of interstate in the state?

I always end up unknowingly doing it.

Best sausage brand currently out there.

I never understood why so many LSU fans insisted on traveling I-65 via Mobile on the way to Atlanta for the UNC game. The Meridian/Bham route is much nicer with prettier scenery and far more decent restaurants along the way. It's only about 25 miles and 30 minutes longer too. The stretch of interstate 65 between Mobile and Montgomery is boring. The deer hunting in the area from Greenville, Selma, near Montgomery (The Black Belt region) is off the charts good though.

There is a place off the atmore exit that is call Creek Family Restaurant that I stop at every time I pass through. Really good home cooked southern food buffet.

I live in ATL. I can eat here or in LA.
The "scenery" from I-10 all the way to Tuscaloosa is nothing to take a picture of, and not worth 30 minutes. The 30 minutes on 65 just north of Mobile is better than anything on the other route.

Heading down there this weekend. Packing sandwiches and eating in BR!

I will join you in that boat. Not having to drive through Montgomery or Auburn is enough for me.

not sure how far you are willing to venture off I-65 but there is a place here called Butch Cassidys that has some real good food. Best burger in Mobile by far, kinda of like Brewbachers/Georges type menu. Also The Shed >>> Dreamland, even the locals around here say Dreamland in Mobile is awful. Felix's, Ed's and The Bluegill over on the causeway are pretty good too.

The Shed is extremely overrated.

regardless of how you feel about the Shed, Dreamland-Mobile is much worse.

Its on Florida, half a block off Old Shell Rd. Great burgers.

Causeway restaurants are ok, but I wouldnt go that far out of the way.

Have to agree with others on here, Mobile is a pretty good sized city to have so few really good restaurant choices.

I have driven all over America and the stretch of I-65 between Montgomery and Mobile is one of the worst (if not the worst) in the country. There is almost nothing there the whole way and it is too long to think you are making progress and too short to get in the driving "zone." You know what I'm talking about - the West Texas between San Antonio and El Paso "zone" where you look at the clock and realize that you have just driven 2 hours on barren interstate without the radio on and you have 3, maybe 4 conscious thoughts and you wonder where the time went as you drive 80 mph in a straight line.

No, the interstate between Montgomery and Mobile is too long to be a short drive and too short to be a long drive. You just keep wondering the whole time, "Aren't I there yet?"

NO. There is no good food that I am aware of on that interstate, and I drive it all the time to go back home from this place.

I just don't mind it for some reason.

I drove across Kansas. Much worse.

Sacramento to Reading is absolutely horrible.

Atlanta to Greenville is torture because of the truck traffic and construction that never ends.

What are the culinary delights between I-10 and Tuscaloosa?
