Anyone here familiar with Monterrey (Mexico)?

I have a former coworker that has invited me to go visit him there. From what I gather it looks like a beautiful city with plenty of great restaurants.
BTW this friend of mine is new to the area so he isn't exactly an expert in the area either. If he was I'd just let him be the guide.

Of course
My biggest concern is how I'm going to get down there. Might see about flying and have my friend meet me. I really really don't like the idea of taking my car into Mexico

If it's financed you most likely wouldn't be able to take there anyway. You have to have some type of immigration/customs paperwork to take your car that far into Mexico (I think it's if you're going over something like 50 miles from border). If you're car is financed, the lien holder has to sign off on the paper work. I don't imagine too many lenders would sign off on it. A few years back, I thought about driving down to Monterrey for a month or two. The financing papers on my car specified not taking it to Mexico, but said could go to Canada for a period (I think up to 1 month). I did look into it, and the Mexican rental car companies had a low end model available for like $300 a month.

It will end up down there soon enough.

It's paid off which is why I personally have no interest in bringing it there

My family went down there when I was about 10. Very little of it at that time was "a beautiful city". We drove for miles and miles through streets in slums. We stayed at the hotel on the hill so we were above all that.
But it was an eye-opener. I think my dad planned it that way. He grew up pretty poor and I think he wanted us to see how the other side had to live.

Fly or drive WGAF. You’ll be fine baw and will have a hell of a time
Personally I’d drive if I were already in corpus. Make sure to stop at a few villages/towns along the way. You’ll have a blast and feel like an idiot for not doing it sooner.

I'm there periodically for process support at one of our factories. It's not a bad place. Beats the shite outta Juarez and Tijuana at least. You're safe enough as long as you aren't stupid. That being said, if you're looking for trouble it isn't hard to find.
