Just bought a high dollar arse Trager pro grill, just cooked ribeyes on it and pretty disappointed honestly... Is there particular wood pellets or anything anybody uses to get it to actually smoke and add flavor to the meat. I bought what wood pellets (oak blend)Home Depot had when I picked the grill up and there just wasn’t really any flavor in the meat when done. I tried several different temperature settings that were suggested online... Any tips? Everybody rants and raves about these things but I’m not seeing it...

Traeger grills are good for smoking and absolutely nothing else. If you want a good steak then fire up your Weber.

I don't think you'll see anyone suggest to grill a $16.00 ribeye on a Traeger. Just not what they are designed to do. Do your low and slows on it. You'll figure it out and enjoy I'm sure.

325 for 15 minutes is what a guy and uploaded instructions suggested on app. Steaks cooked pretty decent (med rare, juicy) and were pretty tender just lacked smoke/grill flavor. Like ya stuck em in the oven honestly...Definitely using pellets had to add after seasoning it per instructions . I honestly thought theses were a do all smoker/ grill...Hence the 1000 dollar plus price tags...

You’re not going to get a ton of smoke flavor cooking for 15 minutes at 500 degrees.

You either do reverse sear , which I don’t recommend on a pellet grill or you turn the fricker up and sear it, which I do with aluminum sear gates at 600. Come out awesome

I reverse sear my steaks and they come out tasting great on my pellet grill. I smoke them at about 180 to 200 degrees until the steak reaches about 120 degrees internal temperature. I remove my steaks and loosely cover them with aluminum foil and turn my grill up to 500 degrees. I have those sear grates that you order off the internet where you can flip sides and cook on the grates or on the flat side. Once it’s at 500 degrees I throw the steaks back on and sear the hell out of them for about 2-3 minutes per side on thick steaks. I reverse seared a large standing rib roast yesterday and I thought it was much better than my 500 degree oven method that many on here use.

Keep practicing on your pellet grill and you will learn because it’s a little different but once you figure it out the results can be amazing. Briskets, Boston butts, ribs, fish, chicken, turkey, hams, meatloaf, pizza, bread, vegetables, fruit, the list is endless of good food I’ve cooked on my pellet grill. YouTube pellet grill videos and don’t necessarily watch brand specific videos. Kosmo and How To BBQ Right usually have good grill and smoking videos to try. You didn’t waste your money buddy you just need more practice.

You’re not going to get much smoke flavor on steaks in traeger at high levels. You either need to get an alternative pellet accessory going before you put it in high temps. I put mine on 500 for a good sear with grates. Also, oak is a light flavor wood to start with.

I have told many to go with a different pellet smoker with higher temps and always go the next size up you think you need. Look for 600 and higher. Traeger is great for a lot of things but a damn good sear is not one of them.

I can cool some mean turkey, ribs, pork, brisket, sausage, etc. my steaks come out fine now,

This advice is 100% spot on. The only way I can infuse a smokey taste to my steaks is reverse sear them on my smoke setting at 180 to 200 degrees. 220 degrees if I’m in a hurry. I pull the steaks off the grill then turn up the heat to 500 degrees then sear them to lock in the juices. OP try a stronger flavored pellet such as mesquite or hickory for your steaks if a smoke taste is what you desire. I see where another poster advises not to reverse sear on a pellet grill and I’m curious why but in my opinion that’s the only way I’ll cook a steak on pretty much any grill or even in the oven. Especially real thick steaks.

I do the same thing and it works out great. Another option is if you have a charcoal chimney, get it lit with a few charcoals, put a grate over it, and sear your steaks on that after smoking them to 120F. You could also just sear in a hot cast iron skillet on your stove top as well.

I have a Traeger and have cooked chicken, whole turkey, ribs, and pork shoulder all with great success and plenty of smoke. I had to do some tweaking with chicken and cook it at a lower temperature for about two hours so it could get more smoke exposure and then finish it at a higher temp.

I have a Webber kettle that I use fir quick cooking food over high heat, like steaks. I personally wouldn’t cook steak on the Traeger but that’s not the reason I bought it. It was to smoke meats with no worries.

Temp way too low unless you're finishing them off in a skillet.

I cook mine to an internal temp of about 125 on the Traeger, and finish them off in a cast iron skillet with some butter or oil. Get the skillet as hot as you can possibly get it, and sear on each side for around 60 seconds. See how that turns out.

Toss it out and get to smoking food with wood instead of with pellets.

Problem solved.
