I'm still confused. Was this select barrel any different than your basic Blanton's barrel?

Probably. As someone mentioned, the guys at Calandros either visit the distillery or Buffalo Trace sends them a tasting of several barrels to choose from. Nonetheless it’s selected by people at Calandros. Does it mean it’s better? Maybe. Depends on preferred flavor profile of person tasting/selecting.

One thing I know it mean is that Calandros took the opportunity to screw their “customers” out of an extra $15 for a “barrel pick”. Blantons should retail in the $49.99-$55 range.

Does Blantons only get attention at Christmas? I used to see it shelf turding at Rouses. Someone tell me what I am missing.

Zuppardos in Metairie had them for $49.99 about two months ago. Cannatas in Houma regularly has them for $52.99.

Blantons isn’t worth $50 much less $70 IMO. But to each his own

BT sent us 3 barrel samples... they all tasted very different

Blantons isn’t easy to get any time of year. We were fortunate enough to get picked by Sazerac to select 1 of 3 barrels in the state this year

Hope everyone that got it enjoys it

The madness was wayyyyy more than we expected

Cheers

ETA: if you find it at 50 bucks that’s basically wholesale. Buy all of it

I used to buy it- lots of it- for about $40/bottle at Cuban liquors. Always had plenty for sale. Don’t know if it was the Japs or hipsters that are responsible for its popularity. But it’s justified at $40-$50/ bottle. Not more than that

Dorignacs was selling regular Blanton's for $79.99.

Funny how the bourbon market changes when you travel. As seen in California a week ago on a business trip:

I've got a buddy who lives in Oregon. He found 6 bottles sitting on the shelf of his local store. He resisted buying all 6 at once and just got one. Several weeks later there's still 3 bottles sitting up there from before.

I like Blantons, but personally, if you poured the liquid in another bottle and gave it another name, it'd be a $30-$35 bottle of whiskey. The dated bottles, the collectible stoppers - they all inflate the price.
