I spent $40 on a “fancy” Brennan’s strawberry cream cheese that turned out to be disgusting a few days ago, tossed it in the trash, and it did not scratch my king cake itch at all.

Any recommendations? That was my first and only foray into the world of king cakes that don’t look or taste like king cakes, I’m looking for something cheaper and classic this go-round

Glad to hear it, Albertsons was my favorite when I was younger but I wasn’t sure if they were still good. Thank you

Oak Point if you don't mind driving out to Central or Watson.

I haven't found any. Had one from Oak Point yesterday (someone from work brought one) and it was just too much -- so much icing and other stuff, I could barely eat it. I've had so many people tell me that such-and-such place has the best king cakes: Lamendola's, Calandro's, etc. and they've all been disappointing. I'll stick to my Amaretto Walnut cream cheese from Keller's Bakery.

The only fresh tasting one I had so far this season was a Mikey’s from Tony’s. Maybe I just happened to catch it at the right time?

I grabbed a Cannata’s from Sputhside Produce yesterday. Can’t say it was cheap but it was damn good.

We had a $15 Bavarian king cake from Oak Point this weekend that was gone in about an hour, no complaints.

While i dont hate the Brennan's strawberry king cake, boy is it a diabetes bomb. too much sugary icing.

If you count around BR…

Ralph’s market in Gonzales or Carters Grocery in denham are both very good.
