Makes really good cornbread. I'll drink a glass with harissa spice on top from time to time.

Is there an expiration date on buttermilk? It tastes as vile as it can get. But as ingredient, nothing can replace it, especially whole milk with lemon juice or vinegar.

Exactly what my grandparents did and I guess I wasn’t ready for that when I was around 8. 35 years later I should probably give it another chance.

Will have some poured over cornbread once in a while. Dont drink it anymore.
I think it is because my mom did it when I was young.

No, but I've been warming up to kefir. Still hard to drink it straight, but I love using it in my overnight oats.

My Mammaw loved the stuff. She used to say "I can drink it 'till I stick out like a pot leg."

That’s not true. I suspect you know that. When it comes to baking, if the recipe calls for buttermilk then you can substitute sour milk. I’ve never used buttermilk, I’ve always used sour milk, mainly in sugar cookies and either banana or date nut bread.
If you don’t have sour milk, you can sour whole milk by adding either lemon juice or vinegar to it at a ratio of 1 Tbsp per cup of milk. Let it sit for an hour before using it. It works and doesn’t impact the flavor. If you’re concerned that it will, use lemon juice. A hint of lemon is usually a good addition to any baked good. You want it to be subtle enough that it’s not readily noticeable.
