Have a group of friends who get together to drink wine and eat once or twice a year. One of the guys is extremely thrifty and always wants to bring in an obnoxious amount of wine into a restaurant. I'm talking a bottle per person if we let him and he would select a restaurant based on flexible corkage.

I've always said for large group, MAYBE 2, and buy the rest. What do yall say?

All depends on the restaurant. We've brought in four bottles for six people before and one place didn't bat an eye.

Unless youre bringing in something they obviously dont have and something you share with the sommelier and chef, I would keep it at an absolute minimum at that. 1 or 2

That is obnoxious. I would be embarrassed to go into a restaurant like that

You should only bring wines that are things the restaurant can't get or just doesn't get. The service is designed for enthusiast not cheap skates.

I’m a fan of a fan 1:1 ratio (bring/buy) where what you are bringing is unique to that restaurant. And always invite your servers, somm, and chef to taste what you’ve brought.

When we do that I don’t think we’ve ever been charged the corkage

TLDR: most of what Jones said

Is that customary? I’ve brought my own a handful of times but never shared with staff.

You’re obviously not a mover and a shaker.

And it better be a hammer and as previously stated, share with the somm.

If they allow a bottle I am good. I’d feel vv uncomfortable with someone hauling 6 bottles in.

That said, just lIke a tip, it’s assumed we pay x amount for alcohol to keep the place running.

Pretty much guaranteed not to pay the fee if you do.

Usually they waive the fee anyway if you aren't popping crap bottles.

Or a cheap frick. I’m only bringing wine if it’s something really nice that they don’t have.

I can understand a special wine that's been saved for a special occasion perhaps, but to bring in multiple bottles of wine just to dodge the tab is obnoxious as previously mentioned, insulting, embarrassing, etc. Why not just bring in your own food and really save?

Call before you go is the answer.

Like Gris said, call before you go is a good way to handle it… but a couple things:

1) Don’t bring in what is in their cellar
2) Don’t ask them to hold/chill/serve

Assuming that is covered in the scenario for all “6” bottles, tip your server ahead of seating on the vino and explain…. “Hey man, we are sharing bottles of wine tonite we wanted to enjoy at your restaurant, here is $100 bill to put in your pocket before we get started…”

From a servers perspective ??

If he can’t afford what the restaurant charges, he can stay home. That’s simply embarrassing. Does he bring in outside food as well to skip out on paying for food?

The fact that the group is having to “dance” around this one person’s odd requests and cheapness is reason enough for said person to be removed from the group if he cannot follow normal etiquette.

Heaven forbid someone be an active contributor to their community. Let's remove them all from the gene pool so that only lazy people who don't care about community are left, great idea. Real movers and shakers don't claim to be...they just are. Envious people claim there's something wrong with being a mover and shaker.
